@editor i will message the others see if i can get them on here i have videos from them i can ask them if i can post?

overnight is important to me as i’m on IOG thats my 7p rate when i should be heating water, and preparing the temperature for day time. Instead i am now using between 2 and 3 KwH in the morning from my batteries.

As a note my heat pump is trenched to the house hence the unit doesn’t back onto any house walls. I.e nit transfer of noise. I have started to back fill but think i might stop doing that until issues resolved!

@swwils i was going to have a Daikin installed in October, they wanted to stick the 16kwh unit in, my heat loss is only 10.7kw, so i queried the unit size was suggested its to do with having a 300l hot water tank. Looking at specification didn’t look as efficient.

i like the cosy concept, monitored, updated over the net, can problem solve, service plan etc. octopus installed my ev charger been my supplier for years, i like the company always sorted my problems, like Greg as a CEO.  Just everything pointed to cosy being the best solution for me

My feeling is that Octopus will be wanting to sort this so I wouldn't despair, instead I would be patient but firm and, as @mars says, I wouldn't pay.  Its clearly a problem affecting more than one person and they otherwise have a very good reputation.  It does feel from the reports like the Cosy 12 is pushing the limits of the hardware (which I presume is essentially the Cosy 9).  Single fan 12kW machines are not unknown but in the minority, so perhaps that's not surprising.

Hopefully firmware adjustments can deal with this although if its white fan noise (as opposed to being noise at a specific frequency due to resonance) I have some doubts and could easily believe that a hardware adjustment might be necessary.  The latter could be as simple as changing a grille however.  The question is, why was this not noticed in testing.  Perhaps the prototypes had a slightly different construction in which case they will know this!

4kW peak of solar PV since 2011; EV and a 1930s house which has been partially renovated to improve its efficiency. 7kW Vaillant heat pump.

@jamespa totally agree, never ever had an unresolved issue with octopus, have been great i fully recommend them.I honestly believe they will resolve but i also feel they shouldn’t be putting other through this until sorted. I really don’t stress never have but this has really got to me mainly due to it affecting the people i love, my wife was against this,  i convinced her how much better it would be, the fact i’m 70 next year, as and was trying to put everything in order for her later life ie  Solar, batteries, ev charger and heat pump, its a large house and was just trying make her life easier when I sign out.

sure they will resolve but this should if been noticed at prototype stage.

As an update to everyone, I've contacted Octopus Energy's Cosy Heat Pump Program Director to get an update on any potential fixes/resolutions. I'll share just as soon as I hear back from him

@editor You're doing incredible work keeping up with all this, and speaking directly to Octopus.

I'm having to also turn it right down at night btw. I have the cosy tariff and I try to use the 22:00 - 24:00 slot to heat up the house a bit, but gave up on that due to the noise.

I've also been gradually turning down the heating targets in general to use the heat pump less. It's not any cheaper than having a boiler, but I'm actually a bit colder. Definitely not living the dream of a warm house 24/7 at roughly the cost of running a boiler.

By far the biggest issue has been the constant buzzing and humming around the house. In my study, which is at the front of the house, I sometimes get such a loud buzz, it starts to cause ache/irritation in one ear (presumably the side where the house water pipes are), and have to leave the study. Even when the buzzing isn't loud, when you spend several hours in the there it eventually causes genuine problems.

I've resorted to sleeping in the front living room, which has a sofa bed, just so I can get genuine quietness at night. I had guests over on the weekend, and I had to sleep in my own room, at one point I had to wear ear plugs.

I have an Octopus guy coming on the 6th of Feb (a month after installation began). I haven't paid yet, and I've been very patient so far, but I'm very much going to have to write a sternly worded letter that they must fix the issue within a few weeks, or I'll have to request they remove the system entirely, and give me a boiler again.

It's wonderful that people such as yourself are so knowledgable and passionate about this stuff, but I don't have the time or inclination to become familiar with the nuances of heat pump installation or operation.

@l2jad So sorry to hear your terrible situation. I did a fair bit of research before installing mine. I am very environmentally minded and stupidly dismissed talk of noise complaints as right-wing anti-renewable rubbish. So many people said their heat pump was quiet enough to sit next to I thought "what's the worst that could happen".

I tried my best to get a Daikin installed as they are a much more established heatpump maker, but Octopus insisted they didn't have a Daikin fit for my house.

During all my discussions with Octopus, no one ever mentioned any potential risks, not one word was said about the potential noise.

I feel like I've been played.

@swwils Done it already. Sent the same files I shared in my original post.

Also just sent a bit of sternly worded letter saying I'm sick of all the disruption, and I won't be accepting another month of this rubbish. I'm either getting it fully fixed in the next two weeks or I'm gonna file a complaint.

It's also not enough for me to just not pay them for the heat pump if they don't fix it, it would cost quite a lot for me to have the heat pump removed and a boiler installed at my own expense.

@razz best if luck I have full sympathy. I know how soul crushing that kind of noise can be

Bang on. I usually take noise complaints with a pinch of salt for the very reason you've cited, but in this case there genuinely seems to be an issue, so hopefully Octopus are working on a fix.

@editor Quite so! And as another reader has mentioned, Octopus are a good company generally and I’m sure though this present situation is very bad, they will come up with a solution soon. It is just such a shame that they seem to have fallen out of the tree with the 12 kW Cosy heat pump so far. I have had various matters rectified over the last few years by Octopus and they have always ‘seen me right’ in the end. Regards, Toodles.
