Hi. I like to monitor the performance of my Ecodan heat pump and use the app MEL-PUMP.

However, I understand that energy monitoring data supplied via MEL-CLOUD is not 100% accurate; comments varying from waste of time to maybe good enough.

I don't want to go full blown Open Energy but notice that there is a mitsubishi kit EMP2 at a reasonable price.

Does anyone have any experience of installing this kit or maybe an alternative? My understaning is that it integrates with MEL-CLOUD which I would need as that data is used by the MEL-CLOUD app.

@richard24738

They are 2 electric meters that are more accurate than the general data on the melcloud, they also interface with your FTC. I have attached a link to show you all of the options, I have never installed these packs as they are more often used for social housing or multi occ with Landalord services (again social application)

@ashp-bobba Thank you for your response.

Do the meters actually provide new data or simply replace the existing calculated energy consumed data with more accurate data. ie the new data would then be picked up by the Mel-Pump app?

If you have never installed these packs does it mean they aren't worth installing or are their alternatives?

@richard24738 Hi, I don't actually know if they replace the data or if you get 3 sets of data from the app, Mitsi claim its more accurate but i think what is most important is the meters are MID compliant and the standard Melcloud is not. If the 2 meters are European standard (MID) then they can be used for official billing so this is a minimum legal req for multi occ and social housing.

Any one that has needed more accurate measuring often go for full heat meters + Electrical metering , the 2 pac is only accurate electrical metering as far as I can see it does not measure heat.

Just to clarify, I have only never fitted them because no one has ever asked me for them, also often clients will have their own electricians install the power and on a few occasions i noticed they have the built in electric meters that sit in the din rail and consumer unit, in effect these do the same but just do not connect directly to the Melcloud, the Mitsi units are interfaced with the FTC providing you the info through the app.

If you speak to Mitsubishi Ecodan sales directly they are amazingly helpful and will explain all of the options.

@ashp-bobba Thanks.

From reading the document, it would seem that the packs were to provide accurate information for grants or housing associations rather than for the homeowner looking to monitor their system.

Any thoughts from your experience on the accuracy of the standard Mel-Cloud data?

Just wondering if "near enough" is "good enough".

Yesterday the Mel-Cloud reported that I had used 1.93 kWh for DHW (produced 7.06kWh) and zero for heating so a few percent either way wouldn't make much difference and if the difference was consistent then any abnormal trend would be still be visible.

Anyway, I will give Mitsubishi a call next week.

@richard24738 Hi, I think is fairly accurate, somewhere between 75-90% but I think this can vary between a pre-plumbed cylinder and a stand alone system, TBH, I think its more about how well the probes are strapped down or what type of clip pocket they are in to get a good reading. Obviously you may look at 75-90% and say this is not accurate at all but compared to many this is.

Nothing beats full heat meter and power meter hands down, but this is for full monitoring, I am under the impression these are above 95 - 99% accurate.

Please note: heat meter accuracy at 95+% is as long as it is installed in the correct location, just thought I would add that before someone calls me out on it, I have seen them way out when the meters are installed to close to components and pumps.
