Interesting.  Ecogenica appear to be an Australian manufacturer trying to break into the UK.  I downloaded the user manual and it is remarkable in that it actually tells you how to run a heat pump properly, not just what the controls do.  Very admirable I must say and very unusual also.

My worry would be support if they don't succeed in getting sufficient business to make them viable long term in the UK.  That's a bit of an unknown.

In terms of the quote it's light on detail but has no buffer or external controls which is good, and indeed what the manual says.  However I presume this is pre survey so it's just preliminary.

How large and what construction is your house and do you have consumption figures for the current heating.   Asking to sense check sizing.

Apart from the support question (which you may consider definitively terminal) I see no red flags at this stage and some reason to be encouraged.  What are your other quotes saying?

Hey everyone.

I had a quote from OVO southwest that I'm progressing to a heat survey. I do have to say that their ways of doing quotes was by far the best out of all the companies I spoke with, having me go room to room on the phone to give rad types and sizes and then them being very flexible in improving their offer.

I'd love to get opinions on Midea and the overall price I've been given. I've seen that Midea systems can be given a limited level of Home-assistant intergration, which is of interest to me.

According to to OVO Midea is doing a big push for the self branded units to be brought into the UK so they added quite a few incentives.

The proposed system highlights:

Midea R290 M thermal Arctic HT Series V8
3 rad changes
Elite Cyl Heatpump Unvented 250l tank
Ariator.
Magnet strainer
System flush + inhibitor.

All for £2,378 inc VAT (post BUS grant).

From my perspective this means that the system would pay itself off after about 4 years.

They have also offered a Vaillant 7kw for an extra £2.5k.

@jamespa Yes very much at preliminary stage.

It's a 1960s semi detached bungalow total area 64m2. Cavity wall construction with wall and loft insulation and double glazing. It will be replacing a combi so no cylinder currently in the property.

Most other suppliers have specified 5KW ashp and are coming in nearer 5K apart from Octopus who were around 3.8k

We have only been here since December so don't have our own annual consumption figures but from the EPC report

  • 8,657 kWh per year for heating
  • 1,921 kWh per year for hot water

OK I can't believe that's more than 5kW, probably only 3kW so the 8kW machine, unless the sticker capacity is very misleading, would almost certainly be well oversized (too much for it to be a good choice).  Of course this could just be cautious quoting to be reduced on survey.

5kW is the smallest commonly available (there are firmware limited models with a lesser rating but not much point really) so not surprised several are quoting that.

Octopus seems to deliver consistently and are obviously well established.

It's a difficult choice TBH.  Depends on your view of risk!

@jamespa I'm waiting for them to come back to me with a date for the survey and I will see what the outcome of that is.

My issue with Octopus is I don't like the look of the cost heat pump. I know it's subjective but to me it looks a bit like a bin you see in fast food car parks but I'm sure lots of people love the look of it?

I have never seen one in the flesh but I do agree about the similarity based on the pictures!

Hello

I’ve sent an email to @editor   asking if there are any recommended ASHP installers in County Durham.

Equally if anyone else has any recommendations on here, it would be great to hear them!

We’d want to install UFH at the same time - in case that’s relevant to the recommendations.

Thanks

Hi, I am new joiner to the forum. I am thinking of getting a heat pump for my house.

It's a three storey townhouse 90m2 built 2010 in Derbyshire

I have been given a quote of 4k

Heat loss of 4kW

Replace the hot water cylinder

And changes to some of radiators for water flow temp of 45

Does it seem right?

In a word yes, based on what you have told us.

You wont find many heat pumps with an output less than 5kW, and unless your house is very badly built its <<4kW

However you need to check

  • No buffer tank, LLH, PHE (volumiser, connected to either flow or return but not both is OK)
  • No third party controls, run on weather compensation not thermostats (so 45 max, decreasing as OAT increases)

You will also need to check workmanship as they go along
