Real world COP vs. manufacturer claim
I think that I would prefer a heat pump from a well known Japanese company, particularly after looking in detail at the data obtained under standard testing procedures, which clearly showed that the Ecodan units could be expected to achieve their specified output rating down to something like -15C.
You are perfectly correct that to obtain the full benefits of a well designed and built heat pump, you also need your whole system to be well designed and installed.
