Now with a shortlist of 2, my preferred installer (based some distance away) doesn't seem keen on installing the Gateway 10m orso away from the meter cupboard and he has now gone silent on me. Installer #2 is closer but is not experienced in Enphase (and I still have to bottom-out the installation details).

where are you based? those of us who have good relationships with installers might be able to give you more potential installers to talk to.

@iancalderbank I had one ‘plumber’ who said that I should think very hard before going ahead having a heat pump installed - they don’t work - you’ll be cold - no, don’t go there! Another prospective installer said ‘Best of luck in finding an MCS registered installer who knows what they are doing (and I had stipulated other certifications I was looking for in an installer) and he didn’t think I had a snowball’s chance of finding one. As it is, the most local installer I could find had to come from the next county some 45 miles away! Regards, Toodles.

The above was possibly my own fault as I had the temerity to specify the make of heat pump and the make and type of heat battery I required for the DHW. 😉 Regards, Toodles.

@toodles my ASHP installer is sat on the same chair as me  😉 . but (I think) @ianmk13 is more after electrical , battery and pv expertise, those might be a bit easier to find installers we're happy to recommend. I know I'd recommend my battery installer to anyone.

@ianmk13 hi. Please have a look at the Worcestershire ASHP thread elsewhere on the site. We have 10mm pipe drops from 28 and 32mm main lines in the loft. My wife said no pipe changes. Hence a design constraint of the solution. Lots of installers said pipes had to be changed and I said bye bye.

@julianc Looking at some of the ‘Heat Geeks’ YouTube presentations, the presenter is challenging some of these ‘old ideas’ by using microbore pipework, uninsulated houses, high temperature emitters as previously powered from gas / oil boilers and claims good COP’s even then! How much is possibly bravado to provoke, I don’t know but I think there are many installers who wish to iron-clad their posteriors to avoid any possibility of comeback if they try anything just a little bit more maverick. I don’t think that the MCS help mind… Regards, Toodles.

@toodles and @JulianC  I've done the calculations and I'm happy that the 10mm copper can carry the required energy.  The issues are more the case that the downstairs pipework goes into the dot & dab plasterboard and if any of the radiators need changing it's more than likely that the pipe spacings will be different (the existing dimensions are unusual).  If that's the case, the plasterboard will have to be chopped then made good or fit surface-mount Heath-Robinson style pipe extensions.  I'm also annoyed that when I had my kitchen renovated last year I allowed myself to be convinced to remove a fan-assisted radiator and fit two tall 'designer' radiators.  The plumbing for one goes round the houses and never gets hot. If the radiator flow temperature reduces I'll probably need an additional radiator with extra plumbing to access the pipework in the ceiling above. I decided that I needed to park that project and get some professional advice.  Meanwhile, I started my PV and battery project and - having now had to turn the heating on again - I've recently been experimenting with the gas-fired central heating, turning down the water temperature to see if I can still heat the house

So what Ian really needs is a 'Warm Wall Panel', 2.4m high by 1.2m wide which can completely replace the plasterboard on which the existing radiator has been mounted.

I wonder if it could be designed so as to be fitted with the same dot & dab technique?
There's a fair amount of suction on that gloop.

The back of the panel could be aluminium to reflect heat forwards.

As for the front material...
... would it need to look like a normal section of wall with a coat of emulsion paint?

Or could it be a feature panel, made from coloured glass or ceramic?

It's akin to a sealed double-glazing unit but with a thin layer of warm water in the middle instead of argon.

Don't immediately dismiss this.
I'm busy dreaming, and I don't to wake up yet....

HI I'm Mike from Essex.

Recently had Mitsubishi Ecodan 8.5 kW ASHP installed and am impressed with the performance so far.

Had solar PV installed over 7 years ago and battery storage 2 years ago and have been driving an EV for over 5 years. The ASHP is the last stage in the journey to a low carbon house.

Interested in making the system as efficient as possible.
