Warm weather and heat pumps.
First off thank you @editor the YouTube vids are really useful. Specially this one.
Just when I had my heat pump running super well, smooth, efficient and warm, the weather changes... 🤦🏻♀️
Now I'm a bit at sea with it and having to tweak settings again. Like Mr Hendra, cost is the priority but also smooth running - no upsetting my little compressor. It's got to last.
How are other Daikin owners finding things? Or Valents? Or...?
You’re welcome @lucia - thanks for watching. I’ve always found late spring and early autumn a challenge to maintain efficiencies and minimise heat pump stop/starts. Until last week, we’d cranked our weather comp curve right down. As of yesterday, heat pump for heating is now off.

I can't turn mine off, I get cold in the evening and when it rains. I am just going to have to run it super low until /if the weather improves to a more consistent warmth. The wood burner is overkill at this time of year. Another good reason to get balcony/mini solar installed to at least keep the cost down.

I forgot about this... what have you decided to do?

@editor Oh nothing right now because $ needed for structural things but if I stay in my current house I thought I'd get a small, dual aspect 800 w kit (with micro inverter) put on the garage roof which is south facing.
A spark can cable it into the board which is also in the garage so very quick, simple installation.
There's some really nice, dinky little, low cost set-ups all on the 'approved' list. I suspect the electrician will cost more than the solar kit. 🤷🏻♀️

We just switch it to either heat or cool. Had it on cool for a couple of weeks, now temps have dropped on heat mode. Likely to cool again later in the week.
Ours is heat or cool, nothing in-between. Circulation pump runs 24/7/365, so always on.
Maxa i32V5 6kW ASHP (heat and cooling)
6.5kW PV
13.5kW GivEnergy AIO Battery.
Ours is still on - stat sits at 23 all year round and is either satisfied, or isn’t. In the winter months it’s rarely satisfied (weather comp set just right) and in spring/summer it eventually gets satisfied by solar gain/house warming up naturally.
Off grid on the isle of purbeck
2.4kW solar, 15kWh Seplos Mason, Outback power systems 3kW inverter/charger, solid fuel heating with air/air for shoulder months, 10 acres of heathland/woods.
My wife’s house: 1946 3 bed end of terrace in Somerset, ASHP with rads + UFH, triple glazed, retrofit IWI in troublesome rooms, small rear extension.

Ours is also still on. Heat pump kicks in a bit at night when it's very cold (6C last night) and generally is off all day. The key as mentioned above is to set the max temperature for heating parameter if there is one (I have a Vaillant so I have switched it to expanded mode which has a similar effect).
If there is no such setting then you could probably use the sensor built into the controller as a limiter, or if you have one and external thermostat, in either case the same as practiced by @hughf
4kW peak of solar PV since 2011; EV and a 1930s house which has been partially renovated to improve its efficiency. 7kW Vaillant heat pump.
Just looked at my WC setting, it is programmed for 25 Deg flow (my minimum allowed by ASHP) at 20 Deg outside. The return temp would have to drop to below 17 to get the HP to restart. If the house is at 20 that never going to happen. Tonight we are expecting zero degs, so heat pump will run, but today it was 12 but sunny so heating stayed off.
So even though not programmed off, it just will not start when it's warmer anyway.
