Review of Ofgem - the energy industry regulator
Today, 20th December 2024, DESNZ is opening a Review into Ofgem.
https://www.gov.uk/government/calls-for-evidence/review-of-ofgem-call-for-evidence
Although Government is asking a series of specific questions, they are not numbered, and we might wish to propose changes which the authors haven't considered.
Ofgem is a non-ministerial Government Department.
It creates and instigates the regulatory framework within which other organisations in the UK energy sector must operate.
These include
- the Energy Ombudsman (see page-23)
- National Energy Systems Operator (NESO), who are in turn now setting up the Regional Energy Strategic Plan (RESP) organisations
- the licensed Energy Suppliers (domestic and commercial)
- the licensed Transmission and Distribution companies for electricity, gas and heat networks
- the licensed energy generators
- the wholesale energy trading market (Elexon)
When we discuss problems with organisations operating within the energy market here on this forum, they are working under the rules placed on them by Ofgem.
We often discuss lack of accountability for MCS, NEPIT etc
and we see generic problems with Suppliers, where the Ombudsman doesn't escalate them up to Ofgem. @korwraith take note!
Here's the opportunity to comment on what's failing and how it needs fixing.
Closing date is 28th February 2025
Save energy... recycle electrons!
Thank you @transparent for flagging this. I have now had the chance to take a look and I feel that there should be some sort of response from the consumer/community.
But how best to achieve this?
It would be quite easy for a community, a group of consumers, to agree that 'the energy system in this country is broken', and that 'we feel this through high electricity prices and the high cost of electricity relative to gas'. Also to agree that this situation is 'a barrier to the adoption of low carbon domestic heating technologies'.
It would also be quite easy to agree that the local MP should be made aware of our discontent with this situation, and that they should 'represent our concerns and do something about it'.
It is much more difficult for this community group to respond to this call for evidence specifically, unless they could be guided and coached by someone who is knowledgeable in this area and, crucially, who could pick out the salient issues from the perspective of the consumer/community, so that this could then frame a meaningful response.
So, my question is: is there anyone on this forum who could help with this?
What are the 10, or so, specific issues where Ofgem is currently failing the consumer/community, and how could this be improved?
@korwraith I submitted 24-pages of responses by the close of the consultation yesterday.
I provided links to the topic here which you started about Incorrect Billing.
It's an example of a situation which should've been escalated to Ofgem by the Ombudsman because it affects many consumers, not just yourself.
Save energy... recycle electrons!
Absolutely; the dismissal of escalation by the Ombudsman is a complete dereliction of their mandate.
