Somehow, a book about badly installed heat pumps is performing more efficiently than many badly installed heat pumps.

A huge thank you to everyone who has bought it, shared it, joined the debate or complained about it before reading it.

Heat pumps work but there is quite an appetite for a book asking why Britain has surrounded this excellent technology with cowboys, contradictions, paperwork and complaints procedures that lead everywhere except towards a solution.

I bought it, read it, enjoyed it.  Despite my earlier comments I think it should be compulsory reading for everyone in the industry, and everyone who is involved more generally in retrofit.

Loved it. I am not one for history, but the history of British heating clearly has its audience! Hope it stays up there in the charts. 

The garage turned hedge fund really nails it. Arguable whether that was ever needed (specially if it spreads). But anyway, if the ecosystem could not deliver a market bound by physics (and not enough grid level batteries), we must explore every inch of freedom that escaped MCS!

I've just finished reading BHPSS, @editor, and I can see exactly what others are saying. The book is a startlingly accurate portrait of an industry that is a caricature of itself, and you have been remarkably concise in laying bare every absurdity of the whole edifice. It highlights very well just how competence is able to shine at the same time that incompetence is being given free rein to continue largely unchallenged.

Other than the key narrative about how it's so easy to get a lemon installed and how difficult to then get it remedied, one standout for me is what you said about home automation. Few here on the forum will be ignorant of my heavy involvement with Home Assistant and many may take that to mean I am a strong advocate of it, but what you have said in the book articulates the nuance better than I've seen anywhere else. I'm an advocate for all smart devices working together in a cohesive way and applications like Home Assistant demonstrate that it can be done. However, without a few key standards Home Assistant et al can't do this without complexity being the price paid. The way you've laid this out in the book summarises my feelings perfectly. I don't want to get rid of Home Assistant; I want to get rid of the need for Home Assistant to exist in its current complex form. Manufacturers really need to step up and start collaborating like adults.

The big challenge, of course, is getting the book's message delivered to and understood by the many stakeholders who could in some way reduce or eliminate the whole fiasco. I hope it succeeds.

You’ve captured exactly what I was trying to say about Home Assistant. The problem isn’t that it exists or that people enjoy using it... it’s that homeowners increasingly need something like it to force expensive devices from different manufacturers into the same conversation. Home Assistant is brilliant, but it shouldn’t require a part-time systems integrator living at Number 42 just to make the heating, solar, battery and tariff behave like parts of the same home. The ambition should be to preserve what enthusiasts can build while removing the absurd complexity forced upon everybody else.

And yes, getting the message beyond people who already understand the problem is now the difficult bit. I’ve sent copies to the Prime Minister, MPs, policymakers and other decision-makers, and I’ll keep pushing. The book is funny because the reality is absurd, but beneath the jokes is a very serious argument where excellent technology and excellent installers are being undermined by a system that allows incompetence to wear many of the same reassuring badges.
