I have a Givenergy battery system, and no o wasn't explicitly told the software could be chargeable. However since the original company is already in administration it's a bit late to complain, and what would it gain? The software arrangement seems to be successfully reissued with the option to eliminate the charges by partnering with Axle energy.

So doesn't seem they have acted without regard to customers, in my view.

Overall it has worked flawlessly, so I don't really have any complaint to make......

You can remote control it yourself with other free software if you want. GivEnergy at least had some level of openness. Many of the rival products would be housebricks the moment their magic Chinese cloud went away. (or if China v Taiwan or something kicks off and someone flips the switch)/

See

for a tutorial - it's not trivial but it won't charge you a fee that will magically keep increasing a load each year.

It seems that Paul Landregan and several other senior technical staff from GivE have formed a support company here:

https://predsupport.com/

It will be on a paid basis of course but can be only good news if you have issues and need hardware support.

Mitsubishi Zubadan 14kW with Mixergy 210l DHW in 220m2 barn property. 24 solar panels = 9kWp with GivEnergy 5.0kW Hybrid inverter and 19kWh GivE batteries. Jaga Strada fan-assisted rads throughout. Landvac vacuum glazing/triple glazed windows.

Hmm...I really need to think this through. Another potential subscription following GivEnergy's demise? I can't imagine myself signing up for this and I might opt to take a punt on just chancing my luck that the system keeps ticking over.

If you sign up to Axle Energy's VPN then the Premium subs is paid for by Axle.

I have already signed up with Axle so yes, that takes care of the GE Software subscription, as you say. As an aside I participated in my first 'event' this morning and appears to have worked well.

I am of course relieved to learn that the hardware guys at GE have been able to salvage something out of losing their jobs, and offering support on an ad-hoc basis suits me. I would not 'subscribe' to cover the hardware however, and maybe their customer research has informed the 'ad-hoc' pricing model.  I hope it works out for them (and us).
