Is it normal to use power from the grid when running off the battery?

Thank you @chandykris, that is what I expected to see.  If it was a few hundred W per day I wouldn't have thought anything was wrong but it sounds like it should be tens of Watts

@johnnyb Here is my results for Wednesday 14th. Jan., I only draw from the grid during the 8 Cosy cheapest rate hours if possible. Solar input in January may amount to ~120 kWh and this will be consumed during those sunny intervals as the heat pump exceeds supply right now. Regards, Toodles.

Sorry, I should have selected consumption rather than cost - herewith, the right image! Toodles.

@johnnyb  - check the connections for your Current Transformer at the inverter.
Re-do them if in doubt and see if this makes a change.

Also check that the CT has only the Live Phase wire passing through it, and that the Neutral (and any other wires) are far enough away that their magnetic field is minimised.

@johnnyb

This is ours and is very similar for most days.

Ours imports only around 20w and hour maximum when running off the battery.

Our inverter is a Solis S6 AC Coupled.

The installer has been back and looking at the screen we could see that 2 of the phases were fairly constantly exporting around 100W each (it's a 3 phase supply).  After a bit of searching around and checking the CT's he discovered he had connected the meter to the board in the wrong slots so the phases didn't line up. The CT's are connected through this meter and it meant the inverter was adjusting the wrong phases when trying to balance the load. A very simple thing to correct and looking at the screen on the inverter now I expect we will have minimum import.

Thanks for all the replies, but a simple mistake that has been easily fixed.

I also discovered that I can connect via bluetooth or WiFi directly to the datalogger or the inverter and get readings every 5 seconds, it doesn't need to be via Solis cloud. I think it would also work with an ethernet cable plugged into the datalogger. This way the app updates more or less in real time.  I know I read someone asking about that last night but I can't remember which thread so I'll put it here in case it is of use to someone.

Well I'm pleased I suggested checking the CT connections, but wasn't aware that there's a meter also involved.

I'd be interested to understand this configuration better.
Could you post a photo of the meter and it's connection cables and/or a diagram showing us how the CT's are related to the meter?

It's possible you are thinking of me when you mention getting data and sending commands without needing to be connected online.

I posted in a couple of topics yesterday about the pro's and cons of inverters needing to access the internet.
One of those instances is here.

Great to hear it is fixed!

Our Solis is single phase and we initially had the CT clamp directly connected to the inverter. Subsequently we introduced the Din-rail mountable meter that Solis supply, which is plugged via a dedicated rs 485 port on the inverter. I assume the same thing happens with the three phase one. I will post more info on the Solis inverter thread

Yes, the functionality available via bluetooth on the SolisApp allows much better troubleshooting including with non compatible batteries..

@johnnyb

That's good to hear.

I am very interested in how you have connected to the data logger direct via WiFi to get the polling data every 5 seconds.

Can you guide me through this as I have had a fiddle previously, but was unsuccessful.

Thanks.

Well that's of great interest.

I'll tell you here of my interest, but don't let's expand on this discussion in this topic please.
It's an enormous subject, and will require its own topic.

I would be interested in knowing more so link me in if you start a thread, or expand here as this thread has served it's purpose for me.

I have an Eastron SDM630MCT meter and I will post a photo later when I can get it off my phone.  It is one from the list on the Solis page batpred linked to in the Solis inverter thread.

@bash I have only connected via my phone so far, and with the installer guiding me. I've had a quick look online to see if there is a Solis app for the PC but I can't see one. I was going to ask @batpred later how he connects to his. I know he uses HA but I don't have time to explore that at the moment so am looking at a simple way to connect and get live data, I find the cloud frustratingly slow.

I've just connected again, go to devices, select the datalogger and in 'Line status' there is 'diagnose' in orange, touch on that and it should list the devices it can detect. Select the datalogger. I have had to select it then go back and select it again both times when I first connect to get it to connect.

I can't find how I connected to the inverter earlier so I will need to explore that further and I am wondering if I can plugged the datalogger into my router and find it on the network, meaning I can access it more than a few feet away from the inverter

It was via Bluetooth, using the same app and you can connect to the inverter or the datalogger.

You can also use modbus over tcp but I would not push it that hard.

@johnnyb

Personally, I do not rely on HA for anything beyond the occasional monitoring of the solis and the seplos battery (I configured the bluetooth integration HA has). But some of it is flimsy, perhaps as my HA is run like a lab...

You can also connect to soliscloud via a browser
