I wonder how the 3.5p reduction will apply to a tariff like Cosy where there are 3 rates - a day rate (~30p), a cheap rate 51% cheaper than the day rate (~14.7p), and a peak rate 50% more than the day rate (~45p). Simply knocking 3.5p off each of the three rates would put them out of sync with each other
As the cheap rate and peak rate are derived from the day rate, they may just reduce the day rate by 3.5p which would result in 1.7p reduction to the cheap rate and 5.4p reduction to the peak rate. As I only import at cheap rate, I may therefore only see a 1.7p reduction?

@old_scientist im on cosy tariff, all 3 rates have gone down by 3.5p
Thats reduction of 8.5% peak rate, 12.6% day rate, 25.8% off-peak rate
This month 96% of my energy is used from off-peak, battery stored from off-peak and now solar is starting to help bridge the afternoons so battery can now last till 10pm, the rest is day rate
Ive been given an effective 25% reduction in cost per month
How cheap did Octopus buy the electricity for in advance as I opted for 12month fixed with exit fee to get a good rate
Well, I was wrong! Though, I switched a couple of days ago, I only clicked on accept terms yesterday. So, they briefly put me on 10.5p (7p after discount) and then ten minutes later to 13p (9.5p after discount). When I called them today, the customer service person just mentioned that it's a system glitch as the 7p was not applicable yesterday. Anyhow, despite feeling a bit grumpy, glad this is locked in for the next 12 months. They also mentioned that there are no exit fees, so if rates go down I can simply switch to the lower fixed rates then. What are the odds of that happening!!
They also offered to put me back on the Go variable, but when asked about the new variable rates, they didn't know yet and told that it will be revealed in due course. There's no point waiting, so just asked them to leave as-is on the 12 month fixed.
Posted by: @chandykrisI switched to 12 month fixed and hopefully that's locked at 7p.

@agentgeorge Thank you.
I see you on the fixed Cosy. When / how did you hear about your new rates? I'm on the variable Cosy and have still not heard anything about April pricing.
I guess it's kind of irrelevant for me anyway. A 3.5p decrease in the cheap rate will bring it roughly in line with the 12p SEG rate, and from April we won't be importing anything as we will be self sufficient on solar until the heating goes back on in October.
AIUI, the 3.5p decrease is all from the removal of social levies / policy costs into general taxation, so doesn't reflect any changes in the wholesale price of electricity. As you say, Octopus will have pre-bought your electricity in advance (as you've fixed) through PPA's.

@old_scientist by email Mch 18 from greg.
it was tailored to have my name, and account details, nifty bit of automated script
Perhaps people here will find this article useful?

I have been on fixed tariffs for many years, that I can recall, since I was with People's Energy (a noble project that failed bad 🙁 ).
@old_scientist Well, in my own case, (South East England) the Cosy rate is a little under 1.5 pence down on today’s price.
Your new prices
Electricity
Current prices
until 31st March 2026
New prices
from 1st April 2026
Standing charge (per day) 44.508p 47.707p
Unit rate - peak (per kWh) 44.646p 40.083p
Unit rate - cosy (per kWh) 14.596p 13.111p
Unit rate - day (per kWh) 29.764p 26.718p
So no 3 pence reduction on the cheapest times of the tariff.☹️ Regards, Toodles.
Toodles, heats his home with cold draughts and cooks food with magnets.
My Email from Greg has finally arrived - I'm on the variable (not fixed) Octopus Cosy tariff where there are 3 rates - a day rate (~30p), a cheap rate 51% cheaper than the day rate (~14.7p), and a peak rate 50% more than the day rate (~45p).
As I suspected, they have knocked 3.5p off the day rate, and adjusted the peak rate and cheap rate to remain 50% more and 51% less, respectively. As I only ever purchase electricity at the cheap rate, I've only seen an effective 1.725p/kWh drop, not the full 3.5p. The daily SC has also risen by 4.4p/day (8.7%) offsetting any gains in the rate drop.
Still, massively glad we don't still have our oil boiler with local oil prices still hovering around 140p/L
Edit @toodles I think we cross posted, looks like your rates are similar/fractionally cheaper than mine.

You're comparing a unit charge saving with a daily charge increase. Assuming you use at least 3kWh per day then you'll have an incremental net saving overall.

Indeed, but I don't expect to import 3kW per day for the 3 month period April - June that this Ofgem pricing period runs for, so overall my bill will rise due to the increase in SC, not fall. However, I do appreciate this is a permanent reduction to the unit cost that is welcome and helps (marginally) close the gap between gas and electricity unit costs.

I had overlooked that on the Cosy rate your optimal usage profile will be different to on the Go tariffs where it's logical to fully charge the batteries overnight at all times to taken advantage of the discounted cost relative to the export rate. This guarantees that I'll be importing 15kWh every day simply to charge the batteries to maximise any export the following day.

Has anyone received an email about what their Octopus Go variables rates are going to be? Now that I have moved to fixed Octopus Go at 9.5p off-peak from April, just wanted to check what savings am I missing out on!
