In many of the other countries coal sets the marginal price. We had the dash for gas to remove the industrial power of uk miners (together with imports from China). Whatever your views on the political aims it had the effect of keeping electricity prices reasonable until the gas market price went silly, and allowed us to drop gas for carbon emissions reduction.

This is a useful web site, which allows some personal predictions for 2030

Yeah sure, but those in the chart are all set by gas. I don’t know if there’s a coal countries version but will have a dig.

Do you ever have a look at China? Their decarbonisation is interesting. They’re using coal as a baseline (a lot of it) but the rate of build out of the grid & renewables is extraordinary. Huge!
Now the figures for the last 2 years have been published and coal is flattening. It will be interesting to see if this trajectory continues.

Re the chart, I find it interesting because journalists (sometimes) write about marginal pricing but then don’t explain that the percentage doesn’t have to be fixed at the level we do here.

Ooh great stuff (I think our posts crossed) .
I first began investigating energy trading in an attempt to figure out where prices were going and down the rabbit hole I went. I ended up tracking tankers (which change direction if they get a better price mid ocean). Be warned. 😂

@judith I just realised he’s the guy with the ‘minimum viable data centres’ - he’s extraordinary in the things he codes. I love people like that.
