Wholesale UK gas prices have fallen to the level before the first day of the fighting in Iran. Of course they may go up again.

Be interesting to see if they fall further and what tariff rates are offered in the UK over the next few weeks.

Yes, often it goes up much quicker than it comes down..

@batpred Greg Jackson explained that most energy is ‘bought’ months in advance so the late summer and early autumn are unlikely to benefit from any current drops in price… Regrets, Toodles.

Yes, my main consolation is that I should be almost off gas in a few months. So I may let the gas rate slip onto agile or variable.

Will keep an eye on those gas linked export rates..

Will keep an eye on those gas linked export rates but my monthly DD is in any case unlikely to need to climb..

Thanks for the heads up. Shame Intelligent Octopus Flux (IOF) is still suspended, but I live in hope.

Samsung 12kW gen6 ASHP with 50L volumiser and all new large radiators. 7.2kWp solar (south facing), Tesla PW3 (13.5kW)
Solar generation completely offsets ASHP usage annually. We no longer burn ~1600L of kerosene annually.

@old_scientist

The rates seem ok too, 29.22 peak export here in the NW. It was only today, so we might get better news soon with IOF, I switched this evening.

I used IOF last summer and was really pleased with it, but I'm not so sure about Flux.

I've just run my numbers through Tim and Kat's Solar Tariff Optimiser, and it says Flux is better than our current Cosy tariff, but I'm not convinced. We use around 12kWh/day in summer and have a 13.5kWh battery. If we empty the battery by 7pm, we have to import from the grid at day rate for 7h until 2am, where we can recharge a little at 15.3p to see us through until sun up. A lot of the gains of exporting at peak rate (29.35p) are then lost by 7 hours of import at 25.5p, either that or we retain 40-50% battery capacity to see us through the night which limits how much we can export at peak rate. Daytime solar export at 10.21p is also less than current SEG rates, although as the battery would start the day empty, we will have the capacity to store more of it for later peak rate export.

Can you explain the strategy you use with Flux, and why?

It’s not as lucrative as IOF, I’d estimate about 20% less, but providing you aren’t having to charge an EV (or other high evening loads) it does work out better than cosy and outgoing.

If I assume yours is a typical G99 export limit of 6kW and your mean hourly PV output between 16.00 and 19.00 is also 6kW. Then on a time based control within the PW3 you are exporting 18kWh at say 30p ie £5.40 and you should still be left with a few kWh left in the battery to get you through the evening and night. Add to that the export during the day at the lower rate, let’s say 30kWh at 10p, it’s relatively straightforward to get a daily export revenue of £7-8, with near zero import.
It’s near impossible to generate that on the flat 12p of outgoing.

@papahuhu I have an 8.1 kWp. array, not optimally orientated I admit but, my mean yield between 16:00 - 19:00 is never better than 4 kW at the start and may be a maximum of 1.5 kW by the end of that period. Usually the figures are likely to be a little lower on average. Your panels are obviously working harder than mine! Toodles.
