I have provided Warmur with all the details the architect specified as our house was used as a case study for retrofit. It is 5 bedrooms with quite a large ground floor extension.

Sounds good.

Please forgive my cynicism but I have learned, both in a personal and business context, not to trust anyone in any part of the construction industry (of which I consider the heating industry a subset) until they have demonstrated that they are trustworthy.  There are excellent people out there, but also some scammers and some plain incompetents.  It is, at least in my limited experience, impossible to tell from the sales pitch.  Hence the reason for my questions.  I don't know Warmur and they haven't been mentioned here up till now and they may well be excellent.  Just saying.

No it doesnt.  I have had this problem of duplicated posting before, most frustrating.

we do not have a smart meter for Gas (no signal as live within a conservation area) despite Octopus Energy changing our gas meter three times in last couple of years

That doesn't sound 'right' to me.

The national Smart Meter Network doesn't work like that!

Within urban areas each Smart Meter has a SKU1 Communications Hub bolted on top of the Electricity Smart Meter Equipment (ESME). That does indeed need to have direct access to a telecommunications mast.

SMETS datapaths

As you get into rural areas in South and Central Britain, SKU2 Comms Hubs are installed.

They have a secondary frequency which used to form a Mesh Network with other SMETS2 meters.
Depending on the terrain, that Mesh port might have an external aerial.
The Mesh forms automatically once four or more SKU2 hubs are 'found', and can extend over tens of square kilometers.

CommsHubsSKU

The SKU2 specification and Mesh Networking are defined in the original SMETS2 documentation, approved by Parliament in Nov 2014.

There are still some 30,000 properties which can never connect to the Smart Meter Network via Telefonica or Arqiva technology.

Over a year ago, the SEC (who regulate the system) approved a new firmware which could use household WiFi to make the Wide Area Network (WAN) connection.
It's still heavily protected by cyber security and encryption, and the data-path can only be accessed by DCC.

If you happen to live in such a house, then Octopus should be able to install that type of Smart Meter.

I suggest you email them, and provide a link to this post from me.

Hi everyone! Will here from Passiv. Great to be a part of the forum and to have supported the recent launch of Wattson.

If there are any questions about the Passiv Smart Thermostat, I am here to help 😀

I've been following the forum, watching the podcasts for a while as our heating definitely needed an overhaul.

The house is a 1990 conversion of an old farm building which had storage heaters and immersion for DHW. 19 years ago I installed a solar thermal system heating a 160l HW cylinder. We also fitted a stove with a backboiler that fed a few radiators shortly afterwards.

More recently some infrared heating panels replaced old dimplex panel heaters. These are actually quite good, except for them still being resistive heating.

The solar panel and pump were needing replacing and then a few months ago, the cylinder started leaking from around the immersion. So ripping all that out made sense; however the size of the airing cupboard limited the options of new cylinders to slimline ones or the Viessmann one... which fitted with 15mm to spare and required removing the door frame to fit it in. That was a pain when the first cylinder leaked from one of the stubs when it was first filled. So the second new cylinder went in a few days later. So the journey had begun.

Since then I've slowly been removing storage heaters and fitting four new radiators and getting them connected onto the older well flushed circuit. That old circuit being split into two secondaries with another new secondary fed by new 28mm primaries.

I'm getting close to actually ordering an ASHP, diverter valve, filter ect.

@will-h posting above is the reason for me finally saying hello, as the HP I'm swaying towards is the Haier 6kW R290 single phase air source heat pump, wiring centre and Passiv Smart Thermostat 1 zone pack

@singlespeed potentially the first Haier heat pump on the forums. What's the motivation? Curious.

@editor I watched some of the videos on Grahams heatpump channel and they look to be well put together. Importantly the controller seems to be a lot more user friendly than the Midea. However there doesn't appear to be much information on the specifications, as the brochure has A7/35 and A7/55 outputs of 6kw and a dubious caveat

"The data in this catalogue is purely indicative as the data may vary. Please be advised to check the accuracy of the data with the supplier before purchasing products."

I'll probably end up back at my original option of the 5kw Vaillant.

@singlespeed The Haier is a great unit - we've been very impressed with its performance. With the Passiv Smart Thermostat, you won't need to worry about the heat pump controller - there's a couple of settings for the installer to change at commissioning but then you shouldn't need to touch it. We'll be directly controlling the flow temperature to get the best efficiency, optimise to time of use tariffs, solar PV, etc. If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a DM. 😀

@will-h, this isn't a dig but we would prefer if anyone with questions for you posts those questions on the forum. If there's something one person finds useful to discover, it'll be useful for others too and the forum becomes all the more beneficial as a result. With questions about Passiv starting to increase, it'll also make your engagement here significantly more valuable.
