@transparent you are amazing, thank you for your help
I am considering placing at the front of the house here - this would be more than 1m away but there is a bedroom above.
would a 14kw be quite noisy or do you think this would be suitable?
The 14kW is shallower and taller but definitely does need 300mm behind according to the manual. It's not particularly noisy. Ours is outside the kitchen and you can only hear it when you listen out for it if you know what I mean but I think you would hear it from a bedroom above.
Putting it at the front could increase pipe runs, which can reduce efficiency. And even if you screw up your eyes and think green thoughts it's still a big, ugly metal box right in front of your house. Is there really nowhere it could go at the back of the house?
The other think that occurs to me is that a 14kW Ecodan costs about £6k. Sooner or later somebody is going to realise this and there are a lot of vans going back and forward across the channel every day.

They're nearly all registered, with their serial number, half the control gear is inside the building and, if you have the melcloud module in the control gear, it seems keen to "phone home" and let Mitsubishi know what it's connected to. How much would a £6k Ecodan be worth on the black market? Probably not enough for the effort of moving it and the risk of getting caught.
Good news, @parmstar - during the night your ASHP has had a makeover:
The outer case has been added, using a semi-opaque rendering.
Outside of that, and disconnected from it, vertical oak boards are angled to facilitate airflow through the internal heat-exchanger, whilst simultaneously reducing the spread of fan-noise.
The top is clad with a weather-proof, fire resistant phenolic-resin board...
... sufficiently strong that it takes the weight of the planters above.
The air is heavy with the scent from wild-strawberry flowers which tumble gracefully from the rich compost in the terracotta tubs....

Where is the small pump to pump the condensate up to automatically water the plant? 😋
