Crumbling exterior insulation ASHP
Hi - noticed the exterior pipe insulation around my air source heat pump seems to be crumbling exposing some of the pipe work - any advice on what & where to get replacement insulation. Cheers

@plummersknowe, yeah, that's pretty awful. Completely the wrong stuff to use, and I assume (if it's what I think it is) that it's porous too. The best product on the market that most top heat pump installers recommend is Primary Pro. Where are you based @plummersknowe?
@david-s, can you recommend an installer to @plummersknowe?

Plus the pipe is in contact with the ground so it's a cold/moisture bridge and needs to be lifted or at least an air gap created underneath.
HI few issues there, but let's look at the insulation in general
The insulation looks like is been eaten away or eaten, and also deteriorated.
If the insulation were off the ground more, this could have helped
The insulation used has a low water diffusion resistance, and allso has not been sealed on all joints and all fittings ( you can see them exposed)
This will allow moisture and water to be absorbed, and so seriously reduce insulation efficiency
also the clips are around the pipework, and then the insulation has been fitted, so leaving gaps where moisture and water can get in
Take a look at the primary pro website

Also keeping the flexi hose as straight at possibel help to take the stress out of the flexi connections and makes it easy to insulate and seal

Thanks for the heads-up, we’ve recently moved into the house, the house was built in 2021 along with installation of the ASHP system - I’ve had an heat pump engineer out to service the heat pump and all good however he mentioned the poor insulation job around the exterior pipe work. Will check out the web site you mentioned and see what needs to be done.
I also feel that I need a tutorial on the whole system which is a wireless Heatmiser wireless thermostat system - despite having the Heatmiser app for controlling the system and individual rooms it seems to have a mind of its own and doesnt always update with new information.
Many thanks Plummersknowe

A few details would be good, @plummersknowe; the brand and model of your heat pump would be a good start, along with an idea of how it's been configured (which you may need help determining). We certainly have plenty of people here who're likely to have similar setups, and who may well be in a good position to offer you some tips.
I would say, though, that the advice you get here is almost certain to be suggesting a much simpler way of running your system which effectively removes those thermostats from the equation altogether. One thing at a time, though; first some system details and then we can move towards suggestions after that from someone who's familiar with your kit.

@david-s Thanks for your really useful advice - I’ve now tracked some local installers in the Scottish Borders area and am ‘saving up’ for the pricey Primary Pro insulation - I reckon around 5m may be needed!
I will need to refer further to your website for advice as the house has a an ASHP and solar panels but I need to understand the details of the particularsystem and its nuances to ensure it is working at maximum efficiency - I think there are areas that will need further attention and investigation. Cheers Plummersknowe

Paraphrased, you’re suggesting lots more reading up and a bit of time getting to know your system before deciding on next steps.
I couldn’t agree more.
