What I do find particularly annoying is that many of the forum members who have received help and advice, totally free of charge, then fail to report whether their problems have been resolved or not. 🙄
Whilst I always welcome feedback, good or bad, since it helps improve my knowledge base, I think that it is even more important for new forum members to be able to see that solutions have been found and problems resolved. 😎
I appreciate that you cannot force members to respond, and I doubt that you would get away with 'shooting' one, as an example to the rest, for failure to respond. 😋
@cathoderay one size/answer does not fit all solutions. I have a 22year old bungalow heater by oil. ASHP fitted in April 21. No pipes or radiators changed. SCOP 3.8.
Changing radiators might improve this further, but my wife stated “I don’t want our home ripped up”. So system designed to meet this - I’m still married at 26 years.

I am not sure where I am supposed to have said this in this thread, perhaps you have me mixed up with someone else, or perhaps you are referring to something I said in another thread? If so, a reference would be helpful, so I can respond.

Apologies I forgot to pick up this point.
There's a growing number of topics here on the Forum covering the subject of storage batteries.
There are two alternative strategies to consider:
Grid tied is the most common.
An installer fits inverter and a storage battery which both connect to the 240v mains supply.
The inverter and the battery are both certified to the G98 standard for grid-connection.
Additionally you require permission from your regional Distribution Network Operator (DNO) for G99, because you have two devices, each of which is capable of exporting to the grid.
The Off-grid storage option is cheaper, but normally implemented via a DIY approach which is discussed here.
You can choose a Time-of-Use (ToU) tariff from an energy supplier like Octopus and import from the grid only when it is cheapest or has the highest percentage of renewable generation.
An off-grid installation will continue to provide power when there is a grid-outage.
But it has no export capability, thus denying you the possibility of earning a few pence per kWh if that was of interest.
Because of there being no export, you don't require consent from your DNO.
It's possible to buy a hybrid (solar & grid) inverter which acts as a charger to replenish your battery, and also creates 240v AC to power devices in the home.
Here's such an arrangement installed alongside the grid-tied battery shown above:
To operate a heat-pump your battery storage system would need to capable of delivering about 30A to start the compressor running during each cycle.
An output of 10kW (40A) would also provide enough to run a kettle (3kW) some lights and a computer or TV.
Battery capacity would typically be around 12-30kWh.

Hi,
We live in a converted industrial building, 400m above sea level in the Lake District. We finally finished it in March '22 and have a Mitsubishi Ecodan 8.5kW ASHP with UFH. Until a few weeks ago my knowledge of ASHPs was limited to "Yes, I have one of those" but I am now trying to take ownership of our system. It is a VERY steep learning curve, lots of reading and even more head scratching.
As for installation and commissioning 😬 - I'm hoping the design and installation are ok but a lot of the settings were left as factory settings after commissioning and their technical support department don't get back to you.
So I will be asking a lot of questions and I will be extremely grateful for any support.

Today, the House of Lords has released a report which highlights its misgivings about the Government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). Your own observations indicate the difficulties faced by customers who attempt to take advantage of the subsidies offered under the BUS.
As for your experiences with commissioning and running the system, please see my earlier comments here regarding the documentation and instruction/training which the installer is required to provide under Part-L of the Building Regulations. It is not a matter of post-installation support being left to the manufacturer's customer-service dept.

@transparent Thanks for that. We were commissioned last June and still haven't received our BUS grant, so I'm not sure how they'll cope if more people apply for it. Anyway, I'll save that one for another thread.
Glad to be part of this renewable group. I am mostly a PV guy and design systems for friends. I am venturing into solar Thermal for my new house and need some serious help. Hope i get some answer . Thanks guys
