I am not sure where this topic belongs, so asking in the tariffs category.

The final piece in our fossil fuel puzzle is sorted today. We finally got an induction hob installed and the gas is ready to be disconnected. We still have a gas fireplace in the open plan kitchen living area, but doesn't get used other than on Christmas day. So happy to switch off gas supply permanently!

When I spoke to Octopus, they mentioned that they have forwarded the request to their engineering team and once they give the sign off they would schedule a visit to cap the supply. Is this just a stock response, or are there things they have to check before they give the approval. This is a freehold property and we are the homeowners, so hopefully they don't require any paperwork from the district council or anyone else. Has anyone here turned off their gas connection? I'd love to hear about your experience.

I had this done at two (domestic scale) business premises.  District Council don't need to know, its between you and the gas supplier.  The only difficulty was getting someone to do it for free.  We kept it on for a while (continuing to pay the standing charge) until we changed supplier for all out gas to one that would disconnect the supplies we no longer needed for free.

4kW peak of solar PV since 2011; EV and a 1930s house which has been partially renovated to improve its efficiency. 7kW Vaillant heat pump.

We are with Octopus and they arranged all the paperwork along with the physical removal and capping off of the gas pipe. I had informed them a few weeks ahead of my intentions so they may have been forewarned - it took only a week or so from my official request to disconnect the gas supply. The chap who carried out the physical part was only here for 15-20 minutes including the time that he took for a phone call to check an earth bonding issue for me. No charge for the call out or the work - all done and no SC’s for a gas supply. Oh one more thing, congratulations on choosing to go with. an induction hob, marvellous things - wouldn’t go back to a gas hob, ever! Regards, Toodles.

Thanks @toodles @jamespa,
good to know it was easy to get it done. I communicated with Octopus a few weeks ago and they send an email asking me to confirm. But, I didn't want to start the process before the induction hob is in place. Hopefully we can stop now as all seems to be working.

Thanks @toodles .We used to have an induction when we lived in London. But somehow got this gas hob when we moved. And didn't switch for 13 years until now as we used gas for heating. Love the efficiency and speed of an induction hob. Having said that I am not the main cook at home. So, my Mrs has the veto and glad she likes induction too!

@chandykris The smugness associated with being all-electric should not be underrated either! 😉 Regards, Toodles.

Almost all-electric, @toodles

Our current cooker (a Rangemaster) is still doing sterling service, but we are still looking very seriously at changing to exactly the same but with an induction hob. Nonetheless, whilst that'll finally get rid of (admittedly bottled) gas from our home we still won't be entirely all-electric; there's no way I'm going to give up burning logs on my barbecue in the summer, so yes I'll be smug when I get the new cooker but I'll also stay smug about my al fresco cooking arrangements too.

And one should not underestimate the enhanced flavour provided when cooking on solar power 😉😊

Octopus capped our supply on the day that they installed our ASHP.  No paperwork required, simply needed a written request (email of course).  The only thing they checked on site was that we had no uncapped gas outlets in the home; we capped the cooker pipe 15 years ago and the gas fire pipe was capped ahead of their visit.  They made no charge.

They informed the Centrica (gas network operator) who visited exactly one later to check that we had not fiddled with anything 😮

And yes, food definitely tastes better cooked on the induction 😉

Octopus disconnected our gas supply some years ago, shortly after we fitted the ASHP.  No fuss, and free.  They left the capped off pipe in an ugly brown box which I promptly removed with an angle grinder, to neaten things up.

This left about 15cm of pipe above ground level, next to the house wall.

Cadent Gas turned up about 12 months later to check everything and wanted the exposed gas pipe covered up with some protection, so I told them I would build a box around it and they were happy with that.

@downfield Once OE had removed our gas meter and capped off the supply, we were left with a rather dilapidated meter housing in various shades of mould and moss. I did a removal job on this mess to reduce visual impact at the time. Some months later, we were advised that the road was being re-piped by the BG agents.

I contacted the agent’s help line and explained; when they appeared in our area, I spoke to an engineer and explained I had made contact, he checked his notes and found the request was to be heeded. Not only did they remove the remaining parts of the meter housing but dug into the flower border, shortened the capped off pipe, tidied up the joint in case ‘someone might require gas one day’, made notes on their log and filled in the flower border again then scrubbed and dusted off the wall where the meter had been. No charge - Good Day Sir! 😊Regards, Toodles.
