Interesting session to be involved with @editor and I suspect enough questions remain to do a follow-up.
In interests of clarity.. I mention I'm only paying 8p for Time of Use (ToU) tariff.... this is Octopus Intelligent Go (IOG) which gives a minimum of 6 hours at 7p overnight and a fair daily rate. However they also give extra slots during the daytime hours - also at 7p. Afaik they use this to help balance grid. By maximising daytime slots + batteries (I have 24.6kwh) I can import almost all requirements at cheapest rates except on coldest days when I may need some imports at day rates. I export at 15p using Octopus "Fixed" which is currently set at 15p but terms have been varied and this may change.
So far I'm not importing at 7p and exporting at 15p - with my slow inverter and round trip losses I'm not sure I can make a lot. But will consider further.
I use @WonderWatt to manage my batteries to get filled not only from the overnight slots but also it recognises the daytime slots which easily justifies the cost for me
More importantly use of the overnight 7p to fill batteries will mean that I expect to export a larger proportion of solar production. Something to review at year end.
Note IOG requires compatible E/V and ideally compatible charger. Coupled with batteries offers best savings.
So IOG may not be an option for some people but hopefully the principle encourages others to review ToU options.

In our latest episode, we hand the mic to four homeowners (Mike McMillan, Tom Parsons, Nick Joy and Nigel Harvey) who’ve been through the heat pump journey and lived to tell the tale. It’s a fun and highly revealing episode.

We’re proud to share that the Homeowners’ Q&A podcast has won the Communications Award at the 2025 British Renewable Energy Awards hosted by the REA (Renewable Energy Association).
Now in its 20th year, the British Renewable Energy Awards are considered one of the highest honours in the renewables sector. This win is a significant milestone for us, not just because it recognises the podcast, but because it validates the mission we’ve been pursuing since episode one: helping UK homeowners navigate the often confusing world of renewable heating.
This award is for our brilliant podcast panelists, expert guests and most importantly, our viewers, followers and listeners... homeowners who are doing their best to understand new technology, avoid common pitfalls and make smarter choices.
In just over eight months, we’ve released 52+ episodes, welcomed more than 100 unique guests (and over 200 guest appearances in total) and racked up 185,000 combined views and listens, with over 40,000 hours of total watch and listen time. That engagement shows us just how important homeowner-facing content is, and how underserved this space has been.
We’d also like to thank our sponsors and supporters for helping us keep the show going. This podcast has always been about community and elevating the standard of information available to consumers.
Here’s to more honest conversations, more expert advice and a whole lot more myth-busting in the months ahead.

Just stopping by to say:
1) Mars I'm so sorry that your heat pump hit the skids - not fun - I hope it gets sorted (but yes, it's a bit ironic all things considered but it will be interesting to follow along - life as art);
2) I like the YouTube kitchen table chat format - it works really well, the subjects are well-considered and thoughtful. I really enjoyed the two episodes with Richard.
Nice one. 😊
