Rodent issue... to highlight potential problem from my heat pump service (LG)

One worry was sign of rodent getting up the drainage holes in the unit and chewing some insulation. Fortunately no damage to electronics or pipe.

I will need to give some thought to protect the hole with mesh.... perhaps expanding mesh used by builders. Either galvanised or stainless

Not something I'd considered before and would've thought manufacturers would make rodent proof. Also some signs of chewing external pipe insulation

Almost immediately after install, I had signed of rodent activity - chewed insulation on pipe runs in the loft. They seem to like foam pipe insulation, they've chewed up spare off cuts in the garage too.

I think the drip tray on my Samsung unit has punch out holes to fit a drainage pipe, so there aren't any uncovered drainage holes which seems a better design (unless the installer were to just punch them all out and leave to drip into a gravel soak away below).

Samsung 12kW gen6 ASHP with 50L volumiser and all new large radiators. 7.2kWp solar (south facing), Tesla PW3 (13.5kW)
Solar generation completely offsets ASHP usage annually. We no longer burn ~1600L of kerosene annually.

The gaps and holes have reduced on heat pumps over the years. many we have installed are in rural areas and earlier units often allowed access.  We've seen a few PCBs burnt out with remnants of rodents! plus a few nests by the compressor jacket. In lofts, pipes should be in trunking to reduce nibbling. Watch out for wasp nests too, not a nice find!

We repair a few ASHP a year from rodents damage especially Rats, we recently rebuilt 3no 14kw RED units with the help of Octopus supplying the parts as they purchased RED back a few years ago to manufacturer their Cosy 6 and 9. JLR Tarta Group did some research into rodents and cables and found that the reason many JLR land-rovers and range-rovers had their base electric looms chewed through a lot more than other brands was because  where their loom was part exposed or only lightly shielded it gave easy access and there is an oil within the plastic shroud of electrical cables that rodents like to consume. The same applies to the cables in the ASHP, also we think they like laying on PCBs and inverters as they emit heat.

Thanks for this.

My pipe insulation in my garage has been chewed through (I presume by mice, which I know to be present) over a period of several years, predating my ashp.

The threat to the outdoor unit hasn't occurred to me!  Time for some preventative measures.

4kW peak of solar PV since 2011; EV and a 1930s house which has been partially renovated to improve its efficiency. 7kW Vaillant heat pump.

@editor I opened up again to take pics.. and prevent further attack. Absurd design with such big hole?

I'd already hoovered out ....

I couldn't find snips for the mesh!! So put a small flat stone on hole plus slate over. Hopefully enough! But will still allow water to drain...

Reducing heat loss with aluminum insulation wrap. Will see if that gets chewed as well!

@tim441 Or as they didn’t quite say in the space travel sci-fi broadcasts of the 50’s, ‘Metal for Tea’? (Sorry) Toodles.

Hradline in Telegraph: Brace for plague of rats after sweltering summer

....are now catching rodents longer than 20 inches

Cost of poisons etc has gone up a lot  so I suspect people will not be quite so diligent.

I had rodents chew up the harness on my motorbike, which rendered it unusable, I can only imagine what it will cost me to get it fixed. Now imagine that happening to your heat pump. How much is going to cost to fix it, will it be covered by warranty and would it require a new unit if enough wires have been chewed through?
