[Sticky] Rate the quality of your heat pump design and installation
@keithb If you would like to start a thread describing your system and the current problems Im sure someone here will be able to help. Costs will of course be highest in Dec/Jan/Feb, but should be comparable to gas or oil if you average over the year.
The most important things to minimise cost are to run 24x7 or thereabouts with weather compensation turned down to the lowest value consistent with heating the house. If you run it like a boiler and/or dont have weather compensation properly adjusted it will cost more, possibly a lot more than if run correctly, and be less comfortable. Fortuitously the right way to operate it for efficiency is also the most comfortable and if you get it right (which may take some tweaking) you should end up with heating that is much more comfortable costing about the same to run.
If you would like to start a thread describing your system and the current problems Im sure someone here will be able to help you achieve that.
I would also recommend you read this introduction to help dispel any myths and provide some background.
4kW peak of solar PV since 2011; EV and a 1930s house which has been partially renovated to improve its efficiency. 7kW Vaillant heat pump.
Flawless, by John MacIver, Seaforth Heating and Plumbing, on The Isle of Lewis and Harris: (an entire team and) he were stellar; so efficient, quick, thorough, caring, and a good listener! Gold.
I love being warm now, after 3 years of being cold in Scotland, as I moved here from Maui, Hawaii, and had no idea how to deal with staying warm. Now, I am cosy and grateful on the Isle of Great Bernera, (next to The Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland, across an 8-sec bridge).
I am loving my Mitsubishi Air Source Heating. Flawless.
A few spots on many walls were left a mess, but "walls are not on our docket" is a thing here. It is a Council house that was neglected for 19 Years, so I named it
Taigh an Eala, in Scottish Gaelic, AKA "Swan Nest", and this ugly duckling-near-ruin is evolving slowly, gently and truly into The Swan!
It is an HHP house, Hebridean Housing Partnership, LLC. "We don't paint." is also their thing. And, so I will learn. Ha.
Being warm makes me happy, and feel generous, so I send you...all:
All the Love in the World,
Claire
@claireisamazing, that’s got to be one of the most positive, uplifting and genuinely refreshing posts we’ve had on the forums in a long time.
It’s easy to get bogged down in the problems, complaints and horror stories (and rightly so when things go wrong), but this is exactly what it looks like when everything just works… good installer, good system and a homeowner who can finally enjoy the result.
There’s something quite powerful in what you’ve said about simply being warm. That’s the whole point of all of this and it often gets lost in the technical noise. Three years of being cold to suddenly feeling comfortable in your own home is no small thing.
Also love the “Swan Nest” transformation… there’s a nice parallel there. A neglected house slowly being brought back to life and a heating system that actually supports that journey rather than fighting it.
Credit where it’s due to John and the team as well… that’s how this industry should look when it’s done properly.
And please do stick around and keep sharing updates as things evolve. Posts like this help balance the narrative and give people confidence that it can be done right.

HEAT PUMP REPLACEMENT BY CINERGI
I would rate the installation process by Cinergi as exceptional – a well-managed like-for-like heat pump replacement with a professional approach throughout.
Our install was a replacement for an oversized existing heat pump with a new smaller unit, so the project was more about upgrading and refining the existing setup rather than starting from scratch.
Cinergi conducted an extensive and thorough digital heat loss survey defining an appropriately sized unit, which matched our needs based on the old system being replaced.
The removal of the old heat pump was carried out cleanly and with minimal disruption. The new unit was installed neatly, with careful attention to pipework alignment, routing, mounting, weatherproofing, and pipe lagging. It was clear that effort had been made to integrate the new system into the existing infrastructure rather than forcing unnecessary redesigns.
As of the time of writing (summer) we have not had the opportunity to give the system a full “work out”, however early tests indicate that we now have a far superior system in terms of quality and efficiency.
Overall, the installation was organised and methodical, with excellent attention to detail and a clear focus on doing the job properly rather than rushing the replacement.
2024 build bungalow, Southern England, 179 m2, 14w/m2

@trebor12345 Good to hear of another satisfied Cinergi customer.😊 Regards, Toodles.

@trebor12345… thanks for sharing! Really valuable info for others, and Cinergi are part of the newly developed installer finder tool.

I'm kind of at the end of my heat pump installation now and it's been up and running for about 6 weeks or so, but it was started early May 2026, so the job was very patchy and took ages to finally get what was agreed on in the first place - except for some of the documentation which are still outstanding even through I've asked for it several times - which has been typical of the installers communication 😪
I used Renewable Heat Installation and Servicing of Falkirk in Scotland after reading positive reviews and seeing them on the Heating Hub. I had got quotes from several companies, and Barry from this one was very charismatic and said all the right things to get the job, but unfortunately it was nothing like as smooth as it should have been, and it's not like they were the cheapest.
Don't get me wrong - I went for a Vaillant Arotherm plus 10kw with a 250L Vaillant cylinder, and I'm now happy with the install, it's just the length of time and frustration trying to get it done to what was originally agree that has been the pain, and the reason I could not recommend using them, they were just too much hassle. We spent time chopping and changing a few things as we went through the design process, but several of the agreed changed never made it to the plan the fitters had when they arrived unfortunately, so more changes were needed which were all avoidable.
My expectation was a week for the install - which is what I was told, but they had to come back serval times over the next month to put things right - all of which were agreed at the outset or were issues they had caused - like putting a foot through my ceiling! Most seemed not to be communicated to others or just avoided - an example would be that I had an area of the house where I had two radiators which did not work - I told Barry this and was told "don't worry about it, we can build something into the price to make sure it's all sorted when we finish or the system wont work properly".
Sounds great, but this is the reality - job done, two more radiators added/swapped in that location, none of which worked at the end of the week! Got them back out and they balanced the system again and asked to leave it for a few days to settle - still not working, they then said the pipes were too narrow to carry the flow, so would have to be replaced (why didn't they know/do this on the first week??) So another week went by and they came out and replaced the pipework - it's now working - but they didn't insulate any of the pipework 🤔 When I queried it they agreed to come back (again) to insulate it - (about 20+m) - so three times they were working on the same pipes over three weeks due to their own fault, but I was made to feel like I was badgering them to get what they should have done in the first place.
I could write at great length all the issues and the countless calls and emails to get things eventually resolved, but I'll leave it at that rather than do an autopsy on the fitting of the heat pump. I also got them to fit solar, batteries, a gateway and an EV charger at the same time - and it was much the same case - lots of errors, all sorted, but also all very avoidable 😳
So my high hopes were a bit dashed when comparing what I was told would happen to what actually happened. The system is now up and running for both the HP and the solar and I'm happy with the end result, which is good news, it's just a great pity they could not just have made it a simple and pleasurable experience, because we go there in the end, but the time, effort and frustration of getting there put a real cloud over the install, and I should not have to be constantly chasing them to deliver what was originally promised.
