I'm so confused and worried about the running costs of my heat pump. Please help!
@winnie-wicket hi Winnie, I'm not one of these heat pump experts, but I think what would be very useful if you had copies (or could get them online) of old energy bills. Specifically if you could find a line that says something like "Estimated annual usage" and has a figure in kWh. If you could give that number for a bill just before you got the heat pump installed, and a recent one, that'd help everyone understand how your usage has changed. I ask this particularly because I cannot fathom why your meter is reporting 4kWh usage this year. That figure should be in the thousands, that is unless it's meant to say MWh, but I wouldn't trust a system that gets the two confused.
Is the heatpump hidden behind anything or crammed in an alleyway? It needs good clearance to work effectively. I did see a video where an engineer came to look at a poorly performing system and the owners had put a wooden screen in front of it for aesthetic reasons, and that meant that the heatpump was spitting out cold air, then using that cold air to try to get more heat from for the home, so of course it was performing terribly.
Hi Winnie,
Thanks for providing the data.
Based upon your previous bills and assuming that your account is still in credit, I would say that Bulb is trying it on. I had a similar experience with Shell Energy, even before the energy crises, where they tried to increase our monthly direct debit, even though our account had a healthy credit balance. Basically Shell were trying to keep our money, in their bank account, over the Winter period, rather than repaying some of the balance.
As I stated earlier, ask Bulb to provide a full breakdown of how they have estimated your energy consumption, on which they are basing the monthly direct debit. If Bulb seem adamant about the increase then contact Citizens Advice.
Hope fully Daikin will provide a fully trained Engineer (free of charge) to set up your system correctly. You could ask him or her to ensure that your hot water is being provided by the heat pump and not the immersion heater, and also that you heat pump is operating in weather compensation mode, and is correctly adjusted.
In the meantime it may be useful to switch your heat pump back on, and record your daily electricity consumption at approximately the same time each day. In that way we will be better able to assess your normal consumption, and check it against others under different weather conditions.
The important thing is to keep warm.
- Thank you, but I was with British Gas back then, I've only been with Bulb for about a year, I don't know if or how I could get all those past statements. I will look into it though.
- No the heat pump doesn't have anything in front of it. When it was first fitted I asked for a cage around it as I was worried my little Grandson would put his fingers in the fan. The cage was huge and took up all the path so it was difficult for me to walk past, so now that he's a bit older I've taken the cage down.
- I've no idea why these answers have numbers in front of them, I must have clicked on something that does it automatically, I'm not finding this forum very easy lol..
@derek-m yes a lot of customers are having a terrible time with Bulb apparently. Many have cancelled direct debits and just pay on receipt of bill, I'm thinking of doing the same.
I'm a bit worried to put the air source on, I'm very wary about the bills , but I maybe will put it on to do what you've suggested, and note the readings on here .
Please can I ask what is probably a stupid question, but on the neomas controller, what temperature should it be set to? Thanks
Set the temperature as low as you find comfortable, most people seem to set their heating in the 20C to 21C range.
Where is your heat pump located? Is there a fence or other form of obstruction near to the front?
We are with Octopus Energy after Avro energy went bust. We are very please with Octopus's performance and service. Maybe you should consider changing supplier.
@winnie-wicket, how warm/cold is it inside your home in the evenings at the moment? What’s your thermostat saying?

Posted by: @winnie-wicketIt's saying 16 at the moment.
Then I’d suggest setting it at 19C. With reasonable temperatures outside at the moment, the pump shouldn’t work too hard to get to that temperature and it’ll give you some running cost data without (hopefully) costing too much run.

@winnie-wicket, I've just received a message from Daikin saying that they'll be in touch with you today.

Hi, thankyou, I do have a missed call from an unknown number but I'm at hospital right now, hopefully if it's them they will ring me again? Thankyou so much!
