@julianc, your maintenance deal is a good one, but I suspect you’re in the minority on the good maintenance and warranty deal. Good to hear you’re covered either way.
Theft, I agree, is hugely unlikely.

Posted by: @hughfI've never insured a heating system and would have no intention of doing so when the heatpump goes in (we're in the middle of the planning stages).... If it goes bang and it's outside of warranty, I'll just buy another one.
You’ve got some enviously deep pockets 😆

@editor if you remember, it was one of the reasons I chose Daikin over the competition.
I have not tested them on an emergency call out, but the service contract was carried out on time to satisfaction.
Im surprised your ASHP company and installers won’t support better. You were very pleased with their initial support, design & install.

Just over £3k retail for my unit - if I get 6 years out of it, that’s £10/week. I spend more on my lunch.
All jokes aside - I tend to not be one for maintenance plans or aftermarket warranties. Preferring instead to take my chances and make sure I have enough of a buffer. I’ve run much more complex cars without warranty and still sleep soundly at night.
Off grid on the isle of purbeck

Posted by: @editor@mjr, no, it wasn’t damage or theft I was referring to (even though that is a valid concern on both fronts). My concern was emergency home insurance.
oh then I answered incorrectly. How do I remove my answer? We rarely bother with breakdown insurance after they were pretty poor years ago. There are a few heat pump companies here, so we could probably get help as soon as HomeServe and so on could fix anything unusual.
There are so many insurance options these days, which I believe most people would be better off without. Bike, phone, washing m/c, heating system, pet, so many. They just sap money constantly, and it’s just a money thing - not like they have a special reservoir of heating engineers/ phones/ whatever. I think better to put that money in a bank a/c, save it up. Use it when you need it, it’s much lower stress than talking to all those insurance bods, trying to persuade them to give your money back.
Insurance has it’s place - as standard we just insure car and building (ok so contents came with that one).
@robl I agree completely.... Insurance products are miss-sold to those who can least afford them, usually. That's another one of my pet hates.
I wouldn't bother with car insurance if it wasn't a legal requirement.

I am new to Heat Pumps and will probably be having an Ecodan Monobloc 11.2kw R32 installed in the near future.
Lots of questions so gaining knowledge trawling through the forum but, until I saw this thread, I hadn't considered insurance.
I contacted my insurers (Policy Expert) and they consider the Heat Pump to be part of the Contents not building and he said that the max value covered is £1,000. So I think I have to move insurers.
1. Can anyone suggest an insurance company which provides suitable cover for a heat pump? Going through all the terms and conditions is a minefield so a recomended starting point would help.
2. What insurance cover do I need? The installer and Mitsubishi warrant their work/products for a number of years so do I need the Breakdown Cover? Theft, damage, consequential damage.

That's just nuts. I wonder if they consider an oil or gas boiler to be "contents" too. This really is a complicated issue that many homeowners don't consider (we certainly didn't) when installing a heat pump. There are essentially two elements to the insurance:
* If the heat pump just stops working (much in the same way as a boiler) and stops heating the house – that is typically covered by emergency care. Our policy still doesn't appear to cover this – we're with Lloyds. They refer to "heating appliances", "primary heating" and "heating systems" but when we called them a few years ago when our system stopped working they said this didn't include heat pumps.
* Then there's theft or damage (a tree that collapses and crushes the unit). I don't see how that can be considered "contents".
I am actually working on an article based on this subject and still got some way to go, but curious to see if there have any "developments" and updates from other homeowners.

Thanks Mars.
So thinking about this, the Heat Pump is part of the contents but what about the hot water cylinder and all the other bits and pieces inside the house; they appear to be covered by the Building section of policies. Confused!

Interesting. We are with Aviva Insurance and I read another article regarding heat pump insurance cover so I called them. Aviva Insurance class a heat pump as part of the heating system \ building fabric so do not require any special notification due to its value (as you do with contents over a certain threshold value) or any additional add on cover.
