Phew, that's a relief.  Nothing to worry about, hydrogen does everything!

The Earth uses Hydrogen heating, so why should we be different.

I guess the issue around heating homes centres around the amount of fossil fuels required to make it viable.

Storage and transport/transmission of hydrogen is a problem due to the gasses small atoms (I kid you not.)  making it prone to leaks.

There is no reason why a gas boiler could not be adapted to run on hydrogen though, much like they can be converted to run on LPG.

Hi Baz,

There are companies already manufacturing 'Hydrogen ready' gas boilers, which can easily be converted in the future.

Boiler manufacturers guarantee Hydrogen boilers won't cost more, and ask for Hydrogen ready boilers to be mandatory in 2025.

Also talk of a potential Hydrogen levy.

"The Big Four boiler companies compete ferociously against each other, but they have come together for the benefit of UK consumers and the good of the planet and to protect our market share in the face of competition from ASHPs.”

I added the bold bit in case anyone's wondering.  I'm not knocking them btw; setting aside the green arguments around H2, it seems a reasonable commitment.  The ASHP market needs a bit of competition anyway.

Isn't the transmission more of a problem than the boiler though?

@kev-m, do you know what the price of hydrogen will be - will it be closer to gas than electricity?

It's quite a spin really, where "reducing emissions" is actually "stopping leaks in our pipes".  It's not so much hydrogen ready, it's just fit for purpose for natural gas.
