Are split ASHPs with R290 refrigerant coming soon?
Question. Are there any (or likely to be in the near term) any split ASHPs that use R290?
Background based on my current understanding, reading online, talking to installers and asking an AI. Please correct if you think I or the AI got any of it wrong.
- R290 is significantly more efficient than R32 and can work at higher flow temps which make it more suitable for retrofit into older properties.
- Most (all?) current split ASHPs use R32 because R290 (propane) is flammable.
- Split ASHPs have smaller outdoor units and running the refrigerant pipework can be easier in "awkward" properties.
- GWP 2027 refers to EU F-Gas Regulation changes from January 1, 2027, banning certain refrigerants with high Global Warming Potential (GWP) in new air conditioning (AC) and heat pump (HP) equipment, including self-contained systems ≤12kW.
- So R32 will be banned from most new ASHPs being sold from Jan 2027.
- Manufacturers are currently working hard on designing split ASHPs that can use R290 and that won't blow up your house.

No battery yet. No heat pump yet.
20 year old gas boiler with a bit of a Wallace and Gromit invention to alter the flow temperature depending on whether Hot Water or heatingh is being called.
