Diagnostic Data Needed for Repeatedly Failing Tesla Powerwall 3 System
Last week, we installed 36 solar panels (16.9kWp) with 2 x Tesla Powerwall 3 (2 x 13.5kWh) and a Tesla Gateway. They worked fine for a few days. The solar panels were providing about 2kW. The Powerwall batteries charged at 7p per kWh overnight and powered the house until they were exhausted.
However, after a few days, the system stopped working. I have been making phone calls and sending e-mails to my installers. They have raised the problems with Tesla, who have escalated to their senior engineering team. The system has come back a few times, but then failed again.
It came as a surprise to me that the Tesla app provides no diagnostic information whatsoever. My installer seems to be in the dark as well. The kind of information I would like to see is:
- The status of each Powerwall 3, rather than data aggregated across the two of them
- Events with date and time stamps
- How much solar power each MPPT is receiving
- The status of the inverters
I have looked at the Netzero application which might help, but I need the SSID and password of the lead Powerwall 3. Apparently, this information can be accessed via a QR code on each Powerwall 3. However, this QR code is inside the Powerwall 3, where I cannot access it.
I have looked into Home Assistant, but it can access only the metering data. It cannot access any diagnostics.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how to access diagnostic data?
Thanks,
Graham

You seem to be on the right track... Installers are recommended to take a photo of the qr code before they close.the cover?
Tesla's notes:
If you don't have a photo of the QR code, you can either contact Tesla Support to request it or temporarily connect to the Powerwall's built-in network using its SSID and password to find the information.
Connect to the local network: Your phone can also see the local "TeslaPW" network among available networks. You can connect to this network and find the credentials, or use the password from the QR code to connect directly to your home Wi-Fi.

@batpred thanks very much for your help. I rang Tesla support and he sent me the SSID and password of the lead Powerall. I downloaded the diagnostics using Netzero. To be honest, the diagnostics didn't tell me that much, but there was a bit more information.
Just to be clear, are you saying that you can use the home network, rather than the Tesla Powerall's WiFi network, to download the diagnostics?
Further good news, is that Tesla have agreed to replace one of the Powerwalls, which they said is cycling at a different frequency from the specification - whatever that means.

It seems that connecting to the wifi network of the main Powerwall enables you to find the credentials:
https://docs.netzero.energy/docs/diagnostics/Powerwall3.html
To retrieve diagnostics using the home LAN you would need to have a device that would forward the requests and replies from that wifi network to the home network (acting like a router). I assume that it could be done, if the IP address ranges used by the two networks are different. But since the diagnostics are only accessible from a mobile app, the advantage would be limited.
Did you get Home Assistant working with your Gateway? I had a quick look and it seems that the Tesla authentication method has occasionally changed and this caused a few issues with the integration.

@batpred I installed Home Assistant on my MacBook Pro last night. This is just a temporary platform for me to learn about it. I tried to use the Tesla Powerwall integration, but it would not connect. I think it was probably an issue with the credentials.

Yes, some queries were raised on github recently:
I use an old mini PC for home assistant, others have the dedicated hardware that HA provides. I avoided running on laptops as there's extra complexity with firewall port mapping and potential temporary loss of connectivity. HA is pretty good at recovering from these things, but when troubleshooting issues, the simpler the setup, the less time it takes!
