Air source heat pump planning permission
Does anyone have experience of getting planning permission to site an air source heat pump close to a property boundary?
I know that ASHPs can be installed under permitted development (ie. without requiring planning permission) if they are more than 1m away from the boundary of the property.
In my case, the best place to put the ASHP is closer than 1m to the boundary, so I was considering asking for planning permission to be allowed to do that.
Has anyone on the forum gone through this process? Does anyone know if this permission is ever granted?
Thanks for any advice you can offer!
I have experience of not getting pp and have followed a lot if what others have said.
In summary:
It depends entirely on your lpa. Some, like mine, impose quite extreme requirements on ashps in respect of noise and visual appearance, way more severe than imposed by pd rules. Others appear not to be too bothered.
You could try looking at your local plan and also recent decisions by your lpa to get an idea. You can ask for pre planning advice but it can be of variable quality and you may have to pay.
The 1m rule is unlikely to be a major concern, but other factors such as noise and visual appearance may be as noted above.
There is a current government consultation on pd rights under which it is proposed that this particular rule may be dropped.

@bm212 our local planning authority portal (Powys) allows for searching by keywords. When I’ve searched for heat pumps it brought up countless results. Maybe your LPA has something similar.

Yes - my local authority does have a planning site which I can search - for some reason it didn't occur to me to do that!
I'll search and take a look and see what I can find.
Thanks!
@bm212 please keep us updated. Curious to see what the outcome is.
I had a look at a few applications around us for heat pumps, and I have to say you have to provide a lot more info and data than I expected.
