Samsung AE090JXEDEH 9kW 2018 ASHP - Room Stat
Hello,
New to the forum. I have searched for this point here, but so far have not had any success finding a solution, hoping someone might be able to help please.
The above has been working fault free since new, occasional E919 fault to begin with but has, for the most part functioned without any problems.
This is coupled with a 200lt Joule HWT and single ESI ESRTP4 wired (black & brown wired) room stat.
I would like to change out the room stat to a smart stat with flexibility to control individual rooms.
Which smart room stat would you recommend that will work with the system please?
I run Hive on another oil fired system which appears to work well there but not sure it will work on the above.
Thanks,
G
You absolutely do not want hive…
In fact, why do you need a room stat at all?
Off grid on the isle of purbeck
2.4kW solar, 15kWh Seplos Mason, Outback power systems 3kW inverter/charger, solid fuel heating with air/air for shoulder months, 10 acres of heathland/woods.
My wife’s house: 1946 3 bed end of terrace in Somerset, ASHP with rads + UFH, triple glazed, retrofit IWI in troublesome rooms, small rear extension.

Hi and welcome. It's mostly better to try and avoid using external thermostats to control an ASHP. In most cases, all an external thermostat (even a smart one) does is switch the ASHP on and off. The ASHP will, at the same time, be trying to control the flow temperature using its own systems and the two can work against each other. Also, if you reduce the load too much by adjusting individual rooms, the ASHP may be less efficient.
I have had good results using a weather compensation curve with a simple ESI room stat as a limiter to stop the house getting too hot. I also use TRVs sparingly to make the bedrooms a little cooler. I'm sure there are smart systems that could be set up to do the same. I think problems occur when you try and use external systems that try and switch the ASHP on and off too much. This works OK for a fossil fuel boiler but not for an ASHP.
You might want to look at Homely; they claim to be able to integrate with Samsung ASHPs in a 'smart' way. I have no idea how well this works and I don't think it is cheap.
Are you using weather compensation with your Samsung now?
Noted Hugh, thank you.
Thank you Kev. With that in mind I'll leave the current setup with the ESi controller as it is as it hasn't caused any problems tbh.
I'm not sure if the system is running using weather compensation, is there a straightforward way to check for this? When in Operation mode the bottom left hand corner box of the Samsung controller under "Temp." displays a graph with a thermometer beside it, then to the right of this a "Set" temp reading "0.0degC"
@guido Yes, your description means that weather compensation is set up on your Samsung. It calls weather compensation "Water Law" which you should see in the bottom right of the screen. You can increase the setting of 0 to +5 or reduce it to -5. This will alter your flow temperature by roughly the same amount as the change in setting. The weather compensation curve can also be adjusted by going into the settings as shown in this video from Freedom Heat Pumps
Hello Mike,
Thank you for your response.
Freedom Heat Pumps have been very useful and are a great point of reference - great to see someone actively engaging to help consumers. Unfortunately I have the older, flip down, rubber push button controller, not the newer touch button version. I will consult the manual for this unless you have a direct reference
Many thanks
