Heat Pumps in Canada
I found this story from Atlantic Canada (Halifax, Nova Scotia) interesting.
https://www.nationalobserver.com/2023/09/08/news/heat-pumps-challenge-chill
The efficiency achieved at low (eg -20C) temperatures was something I can only envy.
The Grant technician who did my annual service yesterday agreed with me that it would be cheaper to run the DHW off the immersion heater, than off the ASHP, when the outside temperature was below Zero (here it touched as low as -8C in last winter's cold snap and the kWh consumption of my ASHP went off the scale). I'm going to try this the coming cold season. He also said that the cold damp weather we had, when the ASHP was almost permanently frosted up, was a problem.
Also from that Canada article note that the grid electricity is only 16 cents /kWh - that's about 9p/kWh. In my dreams.

Interesting article Mike, Im surprised the technician said that about your DHW, as to be true your heat pump would have to have a COP of less than 1 at-8C. If thats true its not a good advert for Grant?

Here's a link to another recent study of the efficiency of heat pumps at mildly low temeratures, from a number of countries.
All very encouraging. I wish it reflected my own experience at mildly low temperatures.
Depending on the design and fitting of an individual installation I think there can be a significant difference between the efficiency of the pump itself and that of the overall installation.
