Its not really OK, neither is it true that the Vaillant (or ideal) controller is 'just controlling the upstairs' unless the Vaillant is set to pure WC...

I presume this means that upstairs was too hot? If so and given the FT art which you were operating, no need to worry too much about radiator sizing ...
