Whether you’re a homeowner, installer, retrofit nerd or just someone who’s fallen down the renewable heating rabbit hole, The Great British Heat Pump Quiz is your chance to put your knowledge to the test, learn something new and have a bit of fun along the way.

And yes, we’re charging £5 to take part. Here’s why it’s worth every penny.

Let’s be real. Most online quizzes are either clickbait or cobbled together from random trivia. This isn’t one of them. Our quiz was built to educate and challenge, with 100 high quality multiple-choice questions drawn from technical guidelines, installer experience, commissioning best practices, training materials and manufacturer documentation. It has taken weeks to compile.

To make things even more interesting, we’ve even had questions contributed by renowned heat pump experts like Graham Hendra, Patrick Wheeler, Brendon Uys, James Clark and Damon Blakemore.

@ashp-bobba thank you for your support. We've had a number of registrations but not many have taken the quiz yet. You are the first industry professional to do the test!

How did you find it and what did you think? 

And you didn't scrape through 🤣 There were some hard and trick questions in there.

"The quiz was fantastic... really useful and great fun too. As a homeowner, I didn’t expect to get everything right, but I was surprised by how much I learned. Some of the technical questions made me stop and think, especially around delta T and system control. It really challenged me to understand how heat pumps work beyond just the basics.

Even though I didn’t ace it, I walked away with more clarity and confidence about my system. It’s a brilliant way to test what you know and pick up new insights along the way. Highly recommend it for anyone with a heat pump or thinking of getting one."

@editor I thought it was great, I was more focused on what questions the other experts were issuing and wondering what questions I would have offered 🙂

I also tried to do it at the same time as helping CB with his Ecodan on here, taking an order, answering the phone and helping my team in the office haha so that my excuse for getting a couple wrong (I also don't know everything ASHP) just enough one might say. 

I think it covered a lot of the technical language you hear fired around and highlights the importance of how one element can effect another. Key as always is design, application and commissioning.

I paid my fiver and enjoyed the random questions I got.  How do you get the certificate (I passed)


4kW peak of solar PV since 2011; EV and a 1930s house which has been partially renovated to improve its efficiency. 7kW Vaillant heat pump.

That was fun, thank you @editor. 85%, which is just as well after 35years in the HVAC industry. Some careless answers on my part, and maybe a couple of ambiguous questions. Some howlers in there as well from the pro contributors 🙂

Just had a go at this - scored 83. Not bad for just a homeowner with an ASHP and an interest in system design and how to extract the most efficiency. Many of the questions I got wrong were the technical ones from Graham/Brendan/Patrick that need a little more hardware knowledge.

@steve81uk, that's a cracking score, well done! I designed the quiz so most people with decent low-temp heating knowledge should hit around 80% to pass, while scores between 80-95% are really for those with deep technical know-how of the units inside and out. 93% is still the score to beat.
