Octopus ASHP Offer
It looks like Octopus may be planning an ASHP offering although they use the word boiler. There has been a page on their website intermittently recently with a coming soon 2021 message.
This is a capture of the page on the 22nd of May. The page wasn't live on the actual website the last time I looked
Copy of the Octopus page from wayback machine. Of course it may simply be a test page.
Every Octopus Supergreen Boiler is backed by our 5 year never-pay-more fuel guarantee: if heating your home with a Supergreen Boiler costs more than a gas combi boiler equivalent, we'll cover the difference.
Interesting. That's quite an offer. I would expect lots of conditions.

It may be linked to the upcoming government announcements around the Heat and Building strategy which is due shortly.
It sounds good, but who decides how much energy a combi boiler would have used and at what tariff?

I suspect Octopus do. I would also expect them to adjust the ASHP's running costs down by factoring in RHI or other incentives. It may be one of these schemes where the customer signs it over the them.
Hi Jeff,
Is that not a contradiction in terms, having government and strategy in the same sentence?
Let me know when you see the report, I would be interested in reading it.
I am still confused about what they are offering. In some tweets I have seen, it just shows something that looks like a hydro box, on an inside wall, next to what looks like an H2 labelled gas boiler. I've not seen pictures of the external ASHP fan and gubbins. Odd? Waiting for more details and ASHP reference, rather than "boilers".

I think it's high time that something was done about electricity tariffs for all forms of renewables. Let's be honest, if you have an ASHP, it's responsible for 90% of your consumption. I'll crunch some numbers this weekend to get an exact figure. So it wouldn't hurt to drop the tariff for homes that are running ASHPs or that have EVs. And by dropping tariffs, it's about the government taking the appropriate steps to make it as cheap as possible (through subsidies and whatever other tools and tricks they have at their disposal).
Worryingly, I saw that the government has decided to slap a 20% VAT rate for EV recharging points. Simply doesn't make sense. Where's the incentive for people to make the meaningful switch?

I agreed Mars @editor, tariffs are the key.
There is only 5% vat on home electric. And I think there was always 20% on electric at charge points. But could be wrong.
I think the gov needs to balance the tax regime off electric and onto gas.

@julianc, I didn't know that EVs were on a 20% VAT rate - I didn't read the story this morning, but maybe the government was considering dropping the rate.
Fully agree - electricity needs to get a lot more support and financial relief in order for renewables to get more traction and for them to become a lot more attractive.

They just need to move the green taxes from electricity onto gas. By doing so you'd radically cut the cost of electricity and for the general consumer it wouldn't be an issue as you'd just move the tax from one into the other and they'd balance out
