Not a good January? My heat pump used 840 KWh of electricity
Posted by: @potatomanHi, this being my first winter with the heat pump, not sure what to expect with running costs. In January the heat pump used 840 KWh The property is a 120 sq meters Detached 4-bed dormer bungalow reasonable well insulated in an open aspect near Liverpool. How does it compare. Also, does anybody have consumption figures for this January and last January, this would give a comparison of how cold it has been.
Replying to the OP:
Jan 2024 = 1034 kWh
Jan 2025 = 1185 kWh
which is around the 15% more I'd expect given the colder weather.
I have a dormer bungalow too, and the upstairs insulation is the issue - through the 'walls' leaking into the eaves, and the doors leading to the eaves storage. It's harder to get to and insulate the 'upstairs' for obvious reasons. Grab a thermal camera and see if you have any cold spots that need sorting out.

My first winter with a heat pump too.
3 bed bungalow - 90 sqm (ish) plus cellar, average but patchy insulation, built into a hill & a bit exposed, in the SW.
6kw Daikin monobloc run on pure weather compensation, heating 180ltr tank 50º every other day atm.
Jan '25 504 kwh
180m2 leaky timber frame 4 bedroom house on exposed and elevated north east Scotland. 14kW Ecodan using auto adapt and 300 ltr DHW tank.
Jan 2023 980kW, Jan 2024 1006kW and Jan 2025 903kW
1600kWh total import in January, all-electric house, around 1200kWh of which will be ASHP heating and hot water. January was about 25% of our annual import of 6500kWh and costing about £250 on Cosy Octopus with most load shifted to low rate times. Hey, it is what it is. It was a cold month, but the house wasn't.
