New kitchen with no walls – will fan coil units work?

looking at what i can use in my new kitchen if i get a heat pump fitted. due to so many doors and units using the rest i need to look at plinth heaters. ive seen some that say they work with heat pumps, though surely if im running my system 24/7 the fans on them would also be running 24/7? only other option is some sort of heating from the ceiling, as the heating pipe work is accessible at the moment?

@majordennisbloodnok we have an under plinth heater (a Myson) and it was set up for occasional heating with the gas boiler. The only change for use on the heat pump and much lower flow temperatures was to switch to summer mode. That makes the thermal switch off inactive but the fan still pushes out the heat.

whats the room temp like in the winter and what flow temp are you running? im worried at really low temps they wont heat the kitchen enough.

Have a look at Jaga Strada rads - they go down to 600mm wide and come in various depths which gives more choice of output.

We have them everywhere and they work well with an ASHP.

Mitsubishi Zubadan 14kW with Mixergy 210l DHW in 220m2 barn property. 24 solar panels = 9kWp with GivEnergy 5.0kW Hybrid inverter and 19kWh GivE batteries. Jaga Strada fan-assisted rads throughout. Landvac vacuum glazing/triple glazed windows.

I can't see how an UFH pipe would 'leak' at some point in the future.

The time when it's vulnerable is when the floor is being laid... not after it's encased in concrete or tile-cement.

There are different materials available for UFH pipe.
When I run it beneath a wooden floor using heat-spreader plates, I use multi-layer PEX/Alu/PEX

where PEX is cross-linked polyethylene:

But for embedding beneath concrete I chose a polypropylene pipe (with a resin coating on the inner wall to prevent oxygen transfer.)

That doesn't have the ease of bending which you get with PEX,
but it has far better resistance to being stood on by workman's boots when the concrete gets pumped in!

Save energy... recycle electrons!

@adamk we only switch ours on when the temp gets down to about 2C and it has 2 fan speed settings, purely manual obviously. Our house has doors on every room but we leave them all open so simulated open plan.

If the lounge isn’t quite warm enough then we switch on the kitchen heating (!)

But like all heating discussions it depends on the total house analysis.

2kW + Growatt & 4kW +Sunnyboy PV on south-facing roof Solar thermal. 9.5kWh Givenergy battery with AC3. MVHR. Vaillant 7kW ASHP (very pleased with it) open system operating on WC

Are the fan assemblies incorporated into the main casing or are they a visible 'bolt-on' assembly at the bottom? This isn't clear from the brochure. An initial offer specifies 700mm high K3's. Since these will replace 350mm K1s, I can't see these going down well with MrsMK13 (she has VERY sensitive hearing, so these won't be an easy 'sell', either).

They are inside the casing, sitting on top of the finned emitters. See the pictures on page 10 of the brochure attached.

We run ours on low speed, and there is the faintest background hiss from the fans. You really don't notice it. In a kitchen it would be quieter than a fridge compressor.

BTW if you decide to go for one I recommend ordering through GoGeothermal who give a discount of about 25% on the Jaga list. (or did last year on my last order). In my case a 1000mm wide x 500mm high unit was about £550 +VAT including the fan units.

Thanks. That explains the strangely-shaped 'feet' (looking at the finned emitter on page 6).

We used to have a Smiths Eco-Powerad in our kitchen before it was refurbished. MrsMK13 wanted it gone. Now the new vertical emitters we had installed are a problem for a heat pump (maybe we can rely on the solar gain from the east-facing glass bifold doors and the heat from all the electrical equipment running in the background😉)
