Servicing and maintaining a heat pump is important. In this thread, we're encouraging homeowners to share how much they pay for annual maintenance, who they're using and what the service entails.

We'll get the ball rolling. We have an air source heat pump from Global Energy Systems. At time of writing, their annual service is priced at £216/year which includes the service and cylinder inspection. The service covers the following:

Clean system filter
Check system anti-freeze level
Clean evaporator coil
Clear debris from fan
Clear debris from drip tray and ensure water is draining away correctly
Ensure heat pump system is safe

In our case, the annual service is required in order to honour the warranty.

We had our ASHP serviced for the first time in December 2020 - roughly one year after installation.

I would like to have used the installer but they are located quite far from us and I thought its always nice to have a second set of eyes and ears look at the install and check for any issues. I used the Mitsubishi website to search for local certified installers/service and found a company called air cool engineering. They quoted £193+vat to service our ASHP and cylinder. It actually was a service for the whole heating system as the engineer was here for over 5 hours checking every single aspect of the system as detailed below in the report they send once completed.

We followed their recommended changes and agreed for them to carry out the repairs and improvements and the service once again was to a high standard and the engineer spent a lot of time talking me through the system and didn't mind answering all my questions. He also find a wiring fault that the electricians had left that had caused our underfloor heating system to fail.

We will continue to use them for future services/issues.

@editor Hi Mars. In our case, as my brother came and did the installation, ( he is from another country) I was never going to get warranty, so that left me hoping, and praying that nothing major will go wrong with the unit ( i was told heat pumps are very low maintenance ). It was installed 2016 January. I tried to learn myself  as much as possible about the system. Your videos, Graham's  and the forum has been hugely beneficial for me. I do keep a very close aye on my system.

Here are some of things I had to do:

One day I noticed that the pressure was gone from the expansion tank, above my cylinder. After a little advice from my brother, I decided to buy one from Screwfix and changed it myself costing about £32.

I was seeing people having flow issues, on the forum, I thought I better clean my filter at the hydro box. There was almost nothing in it. I also backflushed the heat exchanger, some result, no dirt. I have to say it is a brand new heating system with 95% plastic pipes, (We used the German; Rehau pipes), the rest is copper. I only have 7 new radiators.

As my heat exchanger is inside the house there is no need for the anti-freeze.

There is almost never anything on the heat exchanger on the outside unit. It is off the floor about 110cm.

I regularly clean the dust filter on my spilt air to air units. As I only use them for heating I don't clean them with chemicals for bacteria (no condensation inside in heating mode, only in cooling)

One thing that scared me once the heat pump just would not turn on. After removed the cover CH was flashing on the little screen. I looked it up online and quickly realised it was heating the oil up as the unit was not on for a while and the oil cooled down to much in the compressor. Once it was heated up the unit turned on no problem.

expansion vessels have a schrader valve so you can reinstate the dry side with a bicycle pump with the appropriate attachment

selaed systems can have micro leaks, and expansion vessels also loose their charge too

@george this looks comprehensive George. And identified a number of issues and fixes. Very good. Did they charge of parts?

My Daikin comes with a 7 year warranty. But I’ve taken out a fixed price 10 year service contract for £264 / year. This covers an annual service, two call outs per year, all parts and labour. Covers the system. Felt reasonable value. But will see after first review and service

@alec-morrow yes, you are right. I remember putting in some air when the pressure was down. But when water is coming out where air should be going in it is definitely a bad sign.

Good afternoon

We had our ASHP serviced for the first time yesterday by the company and the same engineer who installed it last year. We paid £204 for the service, which included VAT. The service engineer (who is also the boss) took less than half an hour to service the pump.

I am left wondering whether he did things properly. I also wonder why he charged us 20% VAT because VAT Notice 708/6 seems to suggest that we should have paid 5% for 'ASHP maintenance'. Can anyone help here please? Is 20% the correct VAT rate?

I thought the legislation said the reduced/zero rate was specifically for installation.  I was charged 20% VAT in April this year.  I will shop around next year though; it seems a huge rip off to me.  My engineer similarly took 1/2 hour and charged £280.

email received yesterday from my installers.  My system was commissioned November 2021 but, see below, it’s first service will be in March 2023.  The installers are some distance from us so I may look for somebody closer given the mileage charge.

J L Phillips - Heat Pump Service Price Update:

Dear Customers,

We would like to inform you that effective 01/08/2022, no services will be booked in between 1st November – 1st March. We hope this new structure will allow us to focus on providing a better service for any call outs and issues you may have over the winter period. If you have a service due during this time, please ring to get scheduled in before if possible.

We would also like to inform you that we now outsource our service and call out visits. We are working very closely with Enviro Heating to provide you with the best service we can. Dan and his team are specially trained in Mitsubishi, Nibe and Daikin Heat Pumps.

With the change in structure, we have also had a slight change in our prices.

Please see our updated prices below:

Services:

Heat Pump 0-17kW - £224 + Mileage (@63p) + VAT

Heat Pump 18-60kW - £350 + Mileage (@63p) + VAT

Solar Thermal – Can vary depending on how many systems are serviced in the same day.

Call Outs:

If you would like to get your service booked in then please call the office on 01636 642790 (Opt 2) or alternatively, you can email service@jlphillips.co.uk

@George

Can you link me to the site you searched to find a local authorised Mitsubishi service agent please?  I’m searching and going in circles to find what I am looking for.

Cheers.

Morgan.
