50 Hz heat pump on a 60 Hz grid
My understanding is inverters modulate .. so heat pumps designed for a 50 Hz grid can run on a 60 Hz grid as well. Is this correct? I see HPs from China rated for both .. labelled 50/60 Hz .. is this true of all models? I am in Canada (60 Hz grid) .. so we don’t have as many options, and I’d love to import the better tech you guys have in Europe.
Single phase heat pump inverter drive consists of boost power factor correction, HV DC bus caps, then three phase full bridge inverter driving the motor. There is no hardware specific reason why a single phase 50Hz model would not run fine on single phase 60Hz as long as voltage is correct. For US-style 240V ie split phase with Neutral in the middle, maybe problems could occur with the noise filter if it is not designed with this in mind. The software may also detect 60Hz, or detect split phase as L/N inversion, decide it is abnormal, and refuse to run. Better ask the manufacturer.
