Missed RHI deadline

I am after some guidance on my rights with regard to my installer and the RHI. The system was installed and commissioned December 2020 on my self build home. I was told at that stage that I would need my EPC to go any further with the RHI and they said I was to contact them when it was done and they would sort the application out for me. Due to personal circumstances etc. I have only just been able to get the house to a stage to have the elements needed to get an EPC done. I was shocked to see that the scheme had ended and the cut off date was 6 months ago.

The installers came out in January 2022 to do some further work and a service and there was not a mention of this looming date or a discussion about how I was getting on with working towards the EPC being done.

Can anyone help with where I stand with this. I see this as a complete lack of duty of care on their behalf.

I'm not really sure its their responsibility as the RHI is paid to you and not them. Worth looking into, but from what you said they completed their work on time for the application to be done. The EPC lies with you and you were (for whatever reasons) late in getting it completed to meet the RHI deadline. Did your contract say anything about the RHI at all?

@batalto Thanks for the reply. There is nothing in the contract, it's more that they said that part of their service was to assist and with that in mind I would see it as a duty of care thing. They knew I didn't have an EPC and would need to complete works to get it done. I had no idea the scheme was ending and it's obviously costing me a huge amount in lost money. I just feel let down by them as when they came back in January to service the system the house was still far from finished and I thought they might have mentioned it. It must have been forefront in their minds.

I'm very distressed by the loss of the money but I think I've no option but to put it down to experience and another unfortunate cost of the personal issues that arose during the build.

The installer had to register the installalation with Ofgem; the customer then had to apply. But nothing could happen without that initial registration. Did your contract specify that they would do this?

@j3nny, welcome to the forums. Based on my knowledge, the installers would have had to provide you with all the relevant paperwork and you would have had a year’s grace period to apply after the RHI deadline if your system was installed before the deadline.

Based on this, I suspect your application window would have lapsed. Having said that, it may be worth sending the RHI an email via their website to enquire whether there’s any chance of applying retrospectively.

You could try calling Ofgem. I did when I had some issues with my MMSP monitoring. They were very helpful although their hours are quite restricted.

@j3nny, I don’t know if you’ve made any progress, but the Heat Pump Federation (HPF) has been in touch regarding your issue. You need to check whether you have a MCS certificate. If you do and it is dated prior to April 1, you will not be eligible for the BUS.
