Octopus (the grid) is my battery
When i got my pv I decided against battery storage for many resons... space, cost, investment return, one day recycling the battery etc... I have a 16kw heatpump and a 8.4kw solar but no battery. I was dreaming of a scenario where my export would pay me more than my import tariff, so that i can use the grid as my battery. After trying many different tariffs for import and export, i found the best combo for my house and my setup so far.
I am on Octopus Agile (last two month averaging 12.3p/kw.)
For export I am on outgoing Octopus fix (15p/kw).

Very similar setup but 8.1 kWp. , 8 kW ASHP and I have battery (27kWh); this means charging at best Agile times enables me to use the cheap(er) hours to charge and not ever use the ‘spensive times at all. I export almost all my PV energy, as 15p. per kWh is more than I usually pay to recharge at night. Regards, Toodles.

Same 'ere. Octopus Agile import, Octopus Outgoing Fixed 15p/kWh export. No idea what my average consumption rate on Agile is right now, as Octopus has failed to bill me last 3 months. (I've been onto them, they say they are missing some data from my smart meter....)
I'm paying £100 a month DD which will more than cover it. I expect about 16-18p/kWh average on Agile based on off-peak charging of 13kW battery storage and avoiding importing much during peak times. Once the ASHP heating season ends, I'll schedule charge my batteries once a day at lowest rate, and then export surplus solar PV + battery at 15p/kWh. It should cover the £200 a year standing charge plus a bit. I only have a 3.6kW solar PV array, but Agile allows me to leverage the commercial advantage whilst also lowering my CO2 footprint. I think that's a win-win.
@allyfish I have a feeling that lack of smart meter readings in this way must be causing OE (and possibly other suppliers too) major head aches. I have experience the missing data affecting my billing quite a few times in the last 20 months. I get the feeling the help staff are becoming frustrated with it all! Regards, Toodles.

For some reason, it took at least 5 emails and about 2 months to get my bill. I bet not many people are asking their supplier. Please bill me ASAP😀, but I really wanted to know how well I am done on average with switching to Agile after GO.

@toodles @andris I have been duly pestering OE staff 😉 They said it was a couple of half hourly readings missing. I can't see why they don't have an algorithm that just averages a value for the missing data from the readings either side if the meter doesn't give up the data after several pinged requests. Maybe I'm over-simplifying the mind-bendingly complicated legal and regulatory framework within which our electricity is supplied. I don't have an electric arc furnace at home I switched on during those missing slots!
@toodles what I mean is that there must not be many of us over all in the whole country asking for the bill.😀

@andris No, I don’t suppose there are! I like to know just what I owe, to whom and for what. I am in credit with OE and will be working with them in a month or two to revise the monthly charge as by then, I will have more than a year’s worth of all-electric consumption and over a year of using an ASHP. The credit will be clawed back and paid into my next Ripple Energy project! Regards, Toodles.

Can i ask how you use Agile as Im trying to find the best tariff for my brother in law who has 4kW of solar which is on rented roof space so he cant get any benefit from export. Im not convinced a battery would help him, but I need to crunch some numbers.
Do you just use energy as and when you need it, or try to avoid expensive times?

I usaly have a look at the price for the next day and plan the day. But most of the time I set my heating to come on from 10:30pm - 6am. During this time closer to the 6 am I have the hot water come on so that I have 250 litre ready in the morning. I also set my dishwasher to the cheapest time of the night to come on. If there is any price plunge (where we get paid for using energy) I make sure hot water gets done with the immersion heater as it is less efficient than the heatpump. ( so it makes as much money as possible). I aslo run the washing machine sometimes during the night as it is very quite. I do try to avoid using anything during 4pm-7pm. The only thing comes on at that time is cooking. That we can't avoid. But now the solar covers most of it usaly. I even turned of my hot water diverter as I get 15p/kw fir export and usually use the heatpump to heat hot water when it is less the 15p and at least 2-2.5 better efficient than the immersion heater.
I hope this helps

@andris Yes that very useful thanks. I do a similar routine using Octopus Intelligent Go but i was concerned about the peak slot 4-7pm. I take it you turn off your heat pump during that period?
