I think the next price review will be an even bigger challenge. The electrical companies want to cover their costs which would see prices reaching 30p/kw. Currently, there is a review by Ofgem into the electricity markets and they are asking for input from electricity companies. I didn't read anything about consumers being involved in this review.
Â
I don't want to sound smug but my electricity use was 24kw at an average 1deg temp didn't get above 2 deg.

A really interesting chat with Jon Fletcher from Big Clean Switch about electricity tariffs and the current energy crisis. Our Zoom was connection on the day was not great so the lips syncing goes in a few places, but still very interesting.Â

Pre-order: The Ultimate Guide to Heat Pumps

@prjohn what's your floor space area you are heating? Would be good to understand your w/m2 to put the 24kW figure into context
For comparison,yesterday 36.6kW, 2.7C average outside, house at c. 21.5C all day/night. 230W/m2.Â
Parts of the house are still a bit warm so could be less. Haven't used the fire yet either.Â
@prjohn thank you. That's 214 w/m2. As a note we were 244 w/m2, so about 10% higher than yourself in terms of heat demand per m2.
I'm sure there a range of questions around house temps, flow temps etc. But I won't get into them!
@editor I just did some quick maths to work out what I would be paying in gas vs electricity. My gas price is 4p/kw and I know my efficiency was 68% - therefore my cost per kW using gas is 5.9p. If I can get my COP to less or equal to that then I am winning.
Since I modified my weather compensation I haven't had a single day where my cost of power was more than my gas - except today, where its on track to overshoot. Given its 2 degrees ambient, I am happy with that!
@kev-m that was thanks to two things
- I balanced my radiators (around the 1st of November)
- I adjusted the weather compensation (3rd November) after step 1 as the house was finally getting warm
I've been tweaking the weather compensation since then in an effort to balance saving cash and avoiding the wrath of my wife
This was our total electricity consumption (not the heat pump). Sadly our household consumes a silly amount of electricity. Sometimes when I put in our consumption on comparison sites its says we are unable to quote for commercial use/consumption 🤣Â
Â
We have finally been setup with E.on next and are paying 21.98p/kWh and a standing charge of 28.59p per day. I've had a look around and I can't find much cheaper with the exception of utility warehouse but that seems long winded as they sell it as a package with phone/mobile/broadband etc so we will stay put with E.on for a little while to see if this calms down.
I'm frustrated more hasn't been made of this crisis on the news as they tend to focus on gas but after updating my spreadsheet for heat pump performance our costs for November 2021 are double that of November 2020. Grim times to own a heat pump! I'm hoping in the spring we will see some new suppliers setting up that might bring costs down slightly.

Mitsubishi Ecodan 14kw ASHP + 500l Cylinder
Interesting figures - it looks like you are using less electricity in 2021 than 2020? Obviously the costs have gone up though so I appreciate your bills are higher. Your usage over the summer looks incredibly low...can I assume your numbers above are not your total electric bill? our summer bills were in the region of £100 for everything.....
The post above is the ASHP performance (the original post a few weeks ago was electricity consumption for the house). I was just showing what a difference the new rates have made to running our ASHP.
Â
We are using slightly less to run the ASHP this year as I made a change to the hot water with the secondary return being very inefficient so it runs less now.Â
