Samsung Air Source Heat Pump suddenly started drawing large amounts of current
I have a Samsung AE160RXYDEG Air to Water Heat Pump that has operated happily for 3.5 years, including being serviced each year, that has suddenly drawing lot more current than normal. This is apparent because wiring at the pump's MCB in the house has started to melt without tripping the circuit breaker! Has anyone experienced this or can suggest where to look next bearing in mind that reconnecting the pump to the mains does not seem sensible?
Thank you. The connections are fine, reinforced by knowing that they have not been touched in 3 years. The challenge is putting a clamp meter on a circuit that might well starting melting if turned on. I can see from a power meter in the circuit that the average current draw in cold weather was 5 Kw but this went up to a peak of 8 Kw.
@iainched what size is your heat pump?

from that description it would seem to be badly terminated or failing connection at the MCB. It’s relatively simple to sort out, replace MCB, trim cable to good copper and determinate being careful of tightening torque etc. essentially an easy job for a standard sparkle.
I would suggest that you check the service schedule includes an inspection of ALL electrical terminations relating to the ASHP. This would be the same for checks in solar, battery an EV chargers which should also be tested in a regular schedule.
Internationally recognised award winning installer of heat pumps and stuff
Thank you. The advice to "replace MCB, trim cable to good copper and determinate being careful of tightening torque etc" has be actioned and all looks OK so far.
