@editor Hi Mars, im not a money man but a typical big name 16kW Beige box heat pump with all the bits you need to install it and a hot water cylinder would cost £6-8k dependant on brand . Supplied and installed by an mcs installer you would expect to pay £10-12k but this can vary a lot depending on positioning and how hard the installation is. So please dont expect every installation to be this price.

this price DOES NOT include the radiators underfloor heating etc.

A Red 16kW  is going to cost closer to £10k for the kit, installed it will be £15-17k. Again subject to positioning etc. Its a big premium but its a very premium product. You cant buy a Bentley for Kia money. Its also simple to install and can be mounted well away from the house, free standing. Its party piece is its output is high, so typically we can cover bigger houses with it. In a new build we are recommending a single RED unit in a house of up to 600m^2. Of course in old houses they have to be smaller because the houses have higher heat loads. hope this helps

bear in mind this was all back of a fag packet maths, your installer or designer will work this out much more accurately than ive done here.

@grahamh would it be sad to say that I found that video rather interesting.  It looks a far better system than my installer intends.  Oh well.

Retrofitted 11.2kw Mitsubishi Ecodan to new radiators commissioned November 2021.

@glanmenai Hi,

I noted in your earlier post that you are limited for space in your backyard. I assume that you are aware that ASHP's require as much space around them as possible, so that the cold air being exhausted is not drawn back into the air intake.

@grahamh

Hi Graham,

I watched the RED video with interest and was pleased to see that the designer had been trying to minimise heat loss and maximise performance.

The SCOP value shown in the video was quite impressive, though I would be interested to know over what time period and operating conditions the data was collected. What was the weather conditions, the heat demand of the property and the capacity of the heat emitters? In the video a leaving water temperature of 30C to 33C was quoted, how did this vary over the various ambient air temperatures, and what effect did this have on the COP value?

@grahamh, they are a bit more expensive (granted they're not final numbers), but based on what you're saying, they really seem worth it if you can afford them. I'll do some more reading up on the units when I get some free time.

@derek-m the house in the video has been running for a few years but if you look on the video it shows how long the unit has been recording, i think its well over a year since being reset.

Its really important to not get hung up on COP, getting the house comfortable and making sure the unit is set up is all that counts. Get any of this wrong and cop goes wrong too. You cant adjust the cop but you can affect it.

manufacturers wont tell you this but a cop of 3 is good over a whole year if you have radiators. With underfloor heating a cop of the high 3s is possible if the installation is good. cops of 4-5 are unicorns, dont believe them till you've seen them.
