Lower electric tariffs for heat pump users
Should heat pump users have a lower tariff for electricity that is used by a heat pump?
How could that be estimated/measured?
Is it worth a petition to the new government to give incentive to heat pump?
That is down to individual energy suppliers and some already do, Octopus have their Cosy tariff, Ovo have heat pump plus to name two.
Perhaps they might concentrate on delivering a working smart meter system first.
British Gas are also offering at 14p/kWh tariff for the first year for heat pump usage:
Presumably they have a separate billing meter for the ASHP.
Samsung 12kW gen6 ASHP with 50L volumiser and all new large radiators. 7.2kWp solar (south facing), Tesla PW3 (13.5kW)
Solar generation completely offsets ASHP usage annually. We no longer burn ~1600L of kerosene annually.
Looks like the BG one only applies for the first year - so potentially a shock if you don't then find an alternative tariff!
@gunboatdiplomat Perhaps Gregg Jackson should wade in and sort them out! 😉 Toodles.

It's not like BG to use sneaky broadband contract-style tactics like that is it? 🤥

No, they shouldn't.
Tariffs need to be redesigned to reduce the weighting on electricity and the politically motivated skewing that 'favours' gas tariffs. Standing charges should be split into consumption bands for different levels of use - as most of Europe already has.
If you have a specific 'heat pump tariff' you will be letting the government/energy companies off the hook for the rest of our tariff nonsense.

Why should we. A well setup Heat pump should be on parity cost wise with a gas boiler, could be cheaper. If you have solar and/or almost always cheaper.
Plenty of TOU tariffs available if you have a smart meter or E7 if you don't.

By 'heat pump tariff' do you mean a tariff specifically for the energy used by your heat pump (lie OVO offer) or something like Octopus Cosy which is actually a ToU tariff for grid balancing and applied to all your electricity consumption, but marketed for and designed in a way to be suitable for heat pumps.
I am guessing its the first of these that you object to not the second?
BTW I very much agree about removal of the skewing in favour of gas prices.
4kW peak of solar PV since 2011; EV and a 1930s house which has been partially renovated to improve its efficiency. 7kW Vaillant heat pump.
@johnmo Or to put it another way: Why are we being charged a levy that subsidises the use of fossil fuel derived gas, for using cleaner / clean electricity? If we are being ‘taxed’ in this way, it is not going to encourage anyone to go green. Carts and Horses. Regards, Toodles.
