Has anyone been checking monitoring the temperatures of the cooling fluid? 

When heating 'ideally' the input temperature to the compressor should be close to the ambient temperature. 

Are heatpump getting close to the ambient temperature or are the far off?

Do they do better when in low modulation?

Monitoring the temperatures of the cooling fluid (I assume you mean the refrigerant) can tell us a lot about how efficiently a heat pump is running.

In an ideal scenario, when heating, the input temperature to the compressor should be close to the ambient temperature. This is because the heat pump is designed to extract as much heat as possible from the outside air, and the closer the refrigerant temperature is to ambient, the more efficiently it can operate. If there’s a big gap between the two, it could indicate that the system is struggling to extract heat effectively, which might point to issues like undersized coils, poor airflow, or even refrigerant charge problems.

From what I understand, modern heat pumps can get quite close to ambient temperatures, especially when running at low modulation. At lower outputs, the system has more time to absorb heat from the air, which often results in better performance and a smaller temperature difference between the refrigerant and ambient air. However, at higher outputs or in very cold conditions, the gap can widen as the system works harder to meet demand.

If you’re monitoring your own system, it’s worth keeping an eye on how the refrigerant temperatures change with modulation levels and outdoor conditions. A well-designed and properly installed heat pump should perform efficiently across its range, but there’s always room for fine-tuning.

Yes refrigerant! My bad translated from Dutch and German ;-).
