Next major hurdle is the transmission lines between west coast and east coast all the NIMBYs are out complaining.
I live in Wales and see loads of signs saying "Say No to Pylons!" I havent seen any yet that read "Say No to Electricity!"
People are curious illogical things.

That reminds me of a wonderful quote by Professor Stephen Hawking.
I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.
Not particularly relevant to the discussion but I'm a sucker for "funny you should say that" moments.

Bit like climate change, stop oil activists, with plastic single use water bottles, nylon tents and rain coats etc. where do they think all this cheap stuff comes from.
One of my favourites is in a Richard Dawkins book. In which I think he requotes it. On having cancer some friends say that they will pray for him. He replies asking them to sacrifice a goat too. 😁

I thought that you would have realised by now, they just erect pylons to annoy everyone, except for the pylon huggers.

Not everyone can afford their own pylon. It's a rampant case of pylon envy; if I can't have one, no-one should. 😆
On a more serious note, I know the Beeb ran an article on the prettifying of pylons (Can electricity pylons ever be beautiful? - BBC News). I wonder if anyone has come up with a design that could actually convincingly look like a tree.

They already have them, they are the poles that distribute the supply locally. They are a tree, without the branches, leaves and roots.

I'd be interested to know if those pylons (aka Transmission Towers) are made from Port Talbot steel.
That issue would be more likely to stir Welsh passions than the presence of the pylons themselves.
Actually the south Wales cable runs are among the more interesting in the UK.
The distribution grid uses a mix of 66kV and 33kV between Bulk Supply Points and Primary substations.
There's also a preponderance of 400kV transmission towers on the quadruple-circuit run between Swansea and the 2012 gas-turbine generation plant at Pembroke docks.
Each 6-armed tower is a double-circuit.
It's unusual to have two runs of towers just a hundred metres apart.
Save energy... recycle electrons!
Rather than pylons it may be possible to install underground cables, at something like 5 times the cost. I do believe that at the moment 5 GW capacity undersea cables are being installed down the east coast, though I'm not certain of the cost. There have been reports that a shoal of Cod raised complaints, but were quickly scooped up in nets and sent to local fish and chips shops. 😋
Yes, I assumed it'd be cost that removed underground cables from consideration.
As for the rest of your post I'm going to ignore the obvious comment about "smells a bit fishy to me" and just say I'm happy to accept aquatic life managing to raise a complaint but the idea there are still enough cod left in our overfished waters to lend the complaint any significant weight is straining incredulity.
And yes, I had considered a comment about the pen to sign the petition needing to be wielded by fish fingers...
I'll get my coat.

Interesting to see the new design T pylon main structure is built in China for cost reasons. Although other bits are at least via or manufactured by UK companies.
https://www.nationalgrid.com/stories/energy-explained/what-is-a-T-pylon
Am not surprised. It is not easy for most manufacturing to be competitive in the UK these days.
Be interesting to see if any UK companies bid for future T pylons
