Hi folks, very interested with the group subject matter. Background, after almost 50 years as a building services engineer i have been installing a huge range of M & E services into mostly commercial buildings. After retiring about 15 years ago i extended and refurbished a bungalo and installed everything "green" i could find at the time including an ASHP for heating and a separate ASHP for hot water supply. The kit we bought has performed ok but lacks the technical development that modern units offer so i am considering replacement. Looking forward to the new journey!
Hi I am systemsThinker01. We getting ready to install an ASHP in our new (self) build. Which in theory will be a passive house, so this should be a doddle. So we are talking to MCS certified installers and getting some odd things back. Although I would consider myself very technical I body-swerved thermodynamics after the compulsory bits at Uni and so am scrabbling to get my head around some of the more technical aspects but the commercial aspects are meat and drink to me and that is also confusing. Our house was designed with great U values everywhere and, according to our advisor, will meet the passive house criteria. Anyway a long way to go and hopefully reading more here will help me get my head around both the technical and commercial conundrums we are grappling with.
I think the challenge really comes down to learning who to trust and for that perhaps joining a crowd and getting it's wisdom should be valuable.

Hi, I'm Stuart. I live by Loch Ewe in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland.
We have a Samsung Gen 6 8kW ASHP with a Joule Smartplumb Unvented Cylinder (DHW and buffer tank) and underfloor heating in a well insulated two bedroom bungalow built in 2020/21.
The system was installed by the plumber working on our new build and commissioned in 2022 by a third party engineer engaged by Joule. On handover following the commissioning, all the UFH room zones were set to maximum flow rate and the pumps were set to maximum and, lacking any experience or guidance, we started off using it like the oil fired heating in our old house.
Since we moved in we have been slowly gaining a better understanding of the system and how to improve its operation and performance, helped in no small part by the wealth of knowledge and experience available here on the Renewable Heating Hub.
I have spent nearly 40 years as an embedded software engineer in process control and communications systems and have recently started adding homebrewed temperature monitoring to the system plumbing to help with understanding the operation.
Things are certainly a lot better than they were initially but there are a few issues that are beyond my understanding so I hope that I can seek some guidance with these.

You might wish to see what I wrote this morning about 'handover' on a topic about Bad Installation instigated by another new member of this forum.
Although the Building Regulations will be somewhat different on your side the border, I suspect there is similar wording regarding the need for site-specific documentation and training.
