Now that it seems to be embedded and working as it should, should I be turning this down?

Also should this just be showing Monday and flashing 12:00 all the time? I suspect not.

I’ve been told basically not to touch this panel but if the clock isn’t set on that then how can any other time settings work?

@marvinator80 great all is installed and running. I have set the cylinder stat to 50degC, which requires the ASHP to provide water at 55degC. It usually charges the tank in under 1 hr, unless, as happened yesterday, the hot water was quite tepid and the ASHP decided to defrost within that hour.

@marvinator80 if your Grant installer has used external 3rd party time clock for daily HW cycle and external 3rd party thermostat for CH control, they both override the internal timer features and functions on the Grant/Chofu controller. But it's nice to have the day and time set properly!

See page 45 of Grant installation guide for setting this.

The Installation Director from the installers came in this morning. Did a few tweaks including adjusting the flow speed, set temperature to 48 and then also balanced the radiators so that the two which weren’t really working are now working.

He also set the hot water fire up for mid afternoons as he reckons that is the time of the day when effect on the heating is minimised most.

Have to say I’m pretty happy. Everything is working and the house feels nice. 40KWh per day used on average for the 5 days so far but first couple of days were high with sub zero temps and taking it from a standing start. Electricity consumption is dropping daily. And it is January.

He did also set the clock! And fixed the immersion schedule. The engineers had it doing a legionnaires blast every day rather than once a week.

@marvinator80 sounds all good. Pleased it has gone well. My wallet-busting 260kWh consumption last week was offset a little by a decent 60kWh solar PV generation, but total electricity, of which ASHP is by far the biggest consumer, was 320kWh over 7 days, eek! I charge the Solar PV battery twice daily on Cosy Octopus low tariff to soften the bill. That moves 11kWh consumption per day from standard or peak rate to low rate. Outdoor temperature today has climbed to a more seasonally typical 7degC, and I'll be under 30kWh for the day with little solar contribution.

The Grant ASHP can modulate right down on power consumption to below 25%, my 10kW Aerona maxes out around 3400W going full tilt, but it will modulate down to 800W steady state as the ambient temperature rises, climate compensated flow temperature lowers, and the heating load reduces. You won't get a fired boiler with that degree of modulation and control.

I charge the Grant 250L cylinder 1-2pm to 50degC when the enthalpy is highest outside, to capture maximum energy at most advantageous CoP, and to also take advantage of the low rate tariff slot from 1-4pm. The cylinder is so well insulated it only loses a couple of degrees by the next morning for showering. Even when the cylinder thermostat temperature shows as low as 20degC the water drawn off the top is over 40degC and plenty warm enough to shower in.

@allyfish that all makes real sense ally and aligns exactly with what the guy today told me and how he has set up the system.

We’re at a balmy 10 degrees outside just now and showing 44 on the tank. The house is warm and the fan is taking a break and not even spinning!

Ok.
On the new settings we got up to a warm house which was lovely but the hot water was more warm than hot. Tank was showing 31.

Ive now added a setting for hot water to heat 6.30am to 8am and again in the afternoon for any evening baths etc.

will see how that goes. I wonder if the house will cool down much between 6.30am and 8pm. If it does, would it be crazy to set a quick 30 min immersion in the mornings instead?

I would use the ASHP for HW generation, as, even accounting for the fairly slow pre-heat time when the flow through the ASHP cools a bit before warming up, it's more energy efficient. Probably a CoP of 2-2.5 vs a CoP of 1 for direct immersion.

It depends on how much hot water you use and when for scheduled charging of the cylinder. Once a day for me works, between 1-2pm, as that way the disruption to heating is minimised. You'll not get much beyond 50degC store temperature with ASHP water at 55degC.  If you were used to a tank that was sitting at 60degC before, you might notice this difference.

@allyfish I have this quandry as well.  Is the additional wear and tear on the heat pump more or less in $$ than the electricity cost on the cheap rate.  Many variables, I have not made my mind up yet.

@marvinator You really need to, as a minimum, get some monitoring, then you can see what is going on.  That should be relatively easy and cheap, if you have wifi signal where your pipes are.

As a minimum flow temp, and hot water tank temp, would be a good start.

From the below I am getting some info on defrost cycles, flow temp, and the DHW cycles.  Not as good as the emonhp stuff, but ... "you get what you pay for [mostly]" and currently helps me understand what is going on.  Also, second image, when I tweaked a setting a bit too far (see cycling) - which I may never have spotted and rectified.

@allyfish

Thanks Ally. The guy turned this down from 52 to 48 yesterday and I have tried to turn it back up but nothing seems to happen. I’ve put it right up to full as the manual recommends 60 but nothing changes on the display when I turn the dial. No numbers changing, no little flame or anything.

Do I need to do something different to change up the target temperature?

cheers,

Martin
