@njt Yes, I think that the OE deal is what others should be levelling down to; it seems reasonable and realistic to me. Toodles.

I had a Daikin 8kw installed by Octopus in September.

I took out their £9 a month plan which covers warranty and an annual service for 5 years.

The 1st year is free.

I also took out the optional plan for a one off cost of £221 which increases the warranty for a further 2 years, 7 years in total.

Reading the charges on here for an annual service cost  I think the octopus deal is quite cheap.

That is a good deal, I like the extended warranty bit too.

That's a far more reasonable price. I'll be curious to see how your first service goes later this. Please post an update when it happens.

£168 a year from our installer.  I don’t think that’s to bad.  Maybe I’m wrong.

@njt I paid my installer £330 for about 90 minutes work which did include washing the outside of the HP!

i am wondering if Octopus would offer their service plan to HPs not installed by them?

if not there’s a gap in the market for an enterprising and competent independent servicing company. 


Mitsubishi Zubadan 14kW with Mixergy 210l DHW in 220m2 barn property. 24 solar panels = 9kWp with GivEnergy 5.0kW Hybrid inverter and 19kWh GivE batteries. Jaga Strada fan-assisted rads throughout. Landvac vacuum glazing/triple glazed windows.

think ill be looking at local people that can do mine when its installed. im quite competent to do it myself but doubt Vaillant would see it that way. so will be in the maintenance eco system until the warranty expires at least.

for comparison my Intergas service about 7 years ago including stripping the thing down to clean the heat exchanger was £50. last year i had it checked but not stripped as would require a new seal £75. this is the sort of price id expect for what essentially seems to be a quick clean of the heat exchanger and some box ticking.

@adamk I understand that to service a gas boiler, a competent service engineer should allocate at least an hour; I had a BG service contract and they were often in and out again in ten minutes! I terminated their contract eventually! Regards, Toodles.

Perhaps in fairness, I should add that sometimes, the annual service every 18 months or so, would be carried out by a ‘proper’, competent and keen service engineer. He [and in once case, she] would carry out a thorough job, stripping down, cleaning the heat exchanger, flue, checking for emissions etc. and replace seals. Sadly, the former 10 minute jobbies were only too frequent. Regrets, Toodles.

I fitted a Samsung 8kw myself on a new build with underfloor heating so no RHI or anything to worry about.

No intention of ever having a maintenance contract and I don't mind that the Samsung warranty will be void. I keep an  eye on the cleanliness of the water filter and for any leaves on the evaporator, if the fan starts to sound funky it'll get new bearings. The refrigerant is hermetically sealed and unlikely to cause bother.

A new unit costs circa £2500. For the more risk averse, perhaps it would be acceptable to put a monthly sum aside in a savings pot in the bank, just in case, which might never need to be used? We use this strategy instead of dog insurance too 😉

@tim441 I’m not so sure I would entertain such a contract; it appears to be a general checkover but excludes parts. The cost is just over 50% of my present cost but….. Toodles.
