Ecodan Cascade system conflicting views
Hi All
Great content and reading so far.
We have 2 x 14kw R32 single phase Ecodan's on their own phase with a 500l HW tank and a 500l buffer.
The house is 5200 square feet but 2/3 of it are double height ceilings. Its very well insulated as was completely modernised/extended 10 years ago and the guy really went to town on insulation - even the dry lining is insulated plasterboard. We have since the heat-loss calc changed 3/4 of the windows to triple glazed so improved still further from the 22mm double glazed units.
I have loads of questions but will start with this that had divided opinion:
Should the heating for the buffer tank be set to temperature compensation?
Currently its at 45 degrees with hot water priority (10 degree drop)
They only went live just before Christmas so quite early in ownership/experience
Thoughts?
Hi JPST21. delighted to see another Ecodan Cascade system on the RHH. I was beginning to think I was the only one! I have 2X 11.2KW R32s with Mitsi FTC controllers and the wireless room stat. Also switched on December 9th just before the temperature dropped and scared the pants off me watching the power meters spin.
Have you worked out how to get a COP figure out of this system? Mine says that the energy monitors are not installed?
Happy to compare notes.
Best regards
Tom
Hi Tom
We’re having the Wi-Fi link installed to be able to use the app rather than go to the plant room to make setting changes.
The energy usage parts are missing which may not be a bad thing although the new supply meter was at zero it’s now reading almost 1900 in 12 days. That did include the end of the cold snap and heating 1000 litres from 11 degrees.
There must be a way to see the usage v generation
The units were supplied as a kit but one terminal block was missing and support told the installers it could be done with the dip switches but this was incorrect and we lost 10 days waiting for the part!
It’s been a bit of a bumpy road so far to say the least
Jez
Hi Jez Very few on this forum seem to be bump free. The wireless kit is good though my software writer son was very rude about the limited functionality of the app interface. It certainly does allow one to control the setup remotely. Though I keep reading threads here that suggest that if we only get the weather compensation process right it will not need to be touched! I have not worked out how to do that yet.
Between December 10th startup and Monday January 2nd (23 days) my system consumed 1140 KWh. ( but in a much smaller house 281m2, heat loss estimate 16.5KW)

I have not looked in detail at a cascade system, since the necessity has only just arisen. I have attached a copy of the very comprehensive manual that Kev posted some time ago, it may throw some light of the subject.
There are also various YouTube videos giving details of how to set up and adjust the parameters for weather compensation. I think that many on the forum would be interested in details of what your son found.
