@majordennisbloodnok I understand that in the case of those without a smart meter, if they ‘sign up’ they will receive a notional value based on the average consumption of everyone else. I suppose that is as fair as they can be under the circumstumbles. Toodles.

@johnmo But then, if you don’t first have your cake, it is tricky to eat it; I have always thought that saying should be: You can’t eat your cake and still have it. Toodles.

The point that I was making was that I received and accepted the invitation last week, and did my best to use more than our normal almost zero kWh's during that period of the day. This week I did not receive any e-mails from Octopus, which would appear that it may be a selective offer.

@derek-m I think the idea is that anyuser who replied in the affirmative to the first invitation would then receive notification of subsequent events. Toodles.

@derek-m, my understanding is pretty much the same as @toodles', but that's largely irrelevant.

The point I was making was about the theory of the offer based on what Octopus have publicised. Your point is about the theory put into practice, and I'm more than happy to accept that Octopus' implementation of the theory may not live up to expectations; I'll reserve judgement until we've seen a few of these sessions playing out in practice. If @toodles' interpretation turns out to be incorrect, you'd be absolutely right in feeling a selective offer is discriminatory. If the above interpretation turns out to be accurate, though, the offer is unlikely to be discriminatory but will be open to criticism on the grounds of poor communication.

Definitely a lot of excess electricity about as Octopus Agile tariff is paying me tomorrow between 10.30am and 3pm for anything I use.

Now there's a question I hadn't thought to ask.

I'm in the same boat and so for every kWh I use between 13:00 and 15:00 I will be "charged" -0.46p (i.e. they will pay me). If I opt into their "free electricity" scheme, does that mean they will waive the "charge" (i.e. they won't pay me)?

Hmm. It'll be interesting to see.

But surely you are doing so to benefit the system, not yourself.

😇 But of course....

Nonetheless, I'm not above accepting a bit of a bonus for doing so and it'll be interesting to see how thoroughly Octopus have thought this all through. Going on their past schemes, I suspect pretty well.

I replied in the affirmative, but did not receive any further offers. I wonder how many other Octopus customers, who could have benefited from some free electricity, also did not receive any subsequent offers?

Actually, I've just looked at the email I received today about it. It specifically says I don't have to opt in or do anything else, so it seems as if my initial opting in is now taken as a default. The plot thickens...

That is all well and good, but if Octopus don't inform the customers, who have already opted in, that there is a free session taking place, then how are they to actually participate?

I'm afraid that my crystal ball is in for repair.

I signed up initially and got confirmation for the first session on 15 Aug. I didn't receive any notification of the session on 18th Aug, but did receive an email about the session on 21st Aug, so notifications seem a little patchy. I'm also subscribed to a thread on another forum about these sessions, so got notification via there from other users.

Samsung 12kW gen6 ASHP with 50L volumiser and all new large radiators. 3.645kWp solar (south facing), Fox ESS inverter.
Solar generation completely offsets ASHP usage annually. We no longer burn ~1600L of kerosene annually.

@old_scientist I’ll continue to flag them when I hear of sessions then, it sounds a though it might be useful to others. Regards, Toodles.

Flagging the fact that you have received an invitation, doesn't mean that other customers, who have not received an invitation, will benefit from free electricity. They could use more but get charged at their normal rate.
