non existent training on compensation controls in the UK

I’ve been installing compensated heating systems for 15 yrs now on gas boilers, so my clients and I are well aware of the multiple benefits. It’s the way heat pumps and boilers are controlled in many countries, Sweden, Germany Denmark Austria Switzerland…

But Compensation controls have never been embraced in the U.K. They aren’t covered in NVQs and there is no training from manufacturers about how compemsation controllers perform to produce efficiency, reliability and stable room temperatures.

I rung NIBE who told me that you can use any control on a heat pump.

So please stop demonising installers when your energy bill is high or you don’t the house gets too cool..there are limited resources for them to support you from the manufacturers or the educational establishments in the UK

This is then political choice and if so then how much is lobbying by the energy companies influencing government policy and why.

I'm not sure that's true @alec-morrow. I'm met several Mitsubishi-trained engineers and they all promoted weather compensation.

I wouldn't demonise individual employees who just are doing as they are told but I would demonise their employers, sometimes quite large companies, who should know better and are taking the easy way out.

And although heat pumps and 3rd party controllers can work badly together (e.g. my 3 week experiment), they can also work quite well.

My next experiments will see what happens when I combine weather comp and thermostats/zones and try and get them working together. I'll post results.

@kev-m i like be wrong, and I will ring Mitsubishi to find out more!

setting up on off thermostats as top limit thermostats will undoubtedly yield benefits, it’ll just be tedious to get right! And of course a shut down zone just changes the dynamics of the system see as higher temperature rises elsewhere.

my prediction is that there will be minimal change in consumption, variations in room temperature, and a few minor unforeseen consequences….
